Philadelphia Flyers Summer 2021 Top 25 Under 25, No. 22: David Kase

No. 22: David Kase

2020-21 League/Team(s): HC Energie Karlovy Vary (Czech Extraliga), LV Phantoms (AHL), Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)
2020-21 Statistics: Extraliga: 27 GP, 6 G, 19 A, 25 P, AHL: 19 GP, 3 G, 6 A, 9 P, NHL: 1 GP, 0 G, 0 A, 0 P
Age: 24
Acquired In: 2015 (drafted)
Ranking in Spring 2020 25 Under 25: 20

Kase played the majority of his 2020-21 season in the Czech Extraliga, where he scored at nearly a point-per-game pace on a team that finished 10th out of 14th place in the league. His 25 points was 6th best on his team.

Because he mostly didn’t play in North America (though I am in Europe writing, I don’t know the Extraliga backwards and forwards), it is hard to comment fully on Kase’s season, and with a grand total of 7 NHL games, he is still an unknown at the highest level. However, as Kase signed a two year deal in the Czech Republic (though his rights are still with the Flyers), we won’t likely see him for a while, if at all.

What are we expecting from Kase this season? What should we be looking for from him?

There really isn’t any expectation from the Flyers on Kase, as he is no longer playing for their direct affiliates, though they obviously do still have the player’s rights. Sparta Praha are one of the better teams in the Extraliga so it will be interesting to see how Kase performs alongside the likes of former NHLers like Vladimir Sobotka and Michal Repik.

How does Kase fit into the Flyers’ long-term plans? Where does he stand in the Flyers’ organizational depth?

It is unlikely he fits into any developmental plans unless he lights up the Extraliga and the Flyers offer him a contract. However, he would have to play quite well for the Flyers to consider that.

What do we think Kase’s ultimate NHL upside is, and how likely is it that he gets to something approaching that?

Kase is most likely nothing more than a 4th liner or 13th forward, so it is understandable why he may decide to make a career for himself in his native country. He could possibly carve out an NHL role for himself, but that time is certainly not now.

Anything else?

It’s a shame that the Flyers didn’t give Kase more of a chance in the NHL, but clearly the team don’t see him in their future (clearly much more so than I do, considering I ranked him at 13).
