Flyers claim Patrick Brown off waivers from Vegas Golden Knights

The Philadelphia Flyers may have found their 12th forward. They claimed center Patrick Brown off waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday.

Brown, 29, made his NHL debut with the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2014-15 season. He played parts of three seasons with the Canes, recording two points (one goal, one assist) in 28 games.

The Philadelphia Flyers may have found their 12th forward. They claimed center Patrick Brown off waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. Brown, 29, made his NHL debut with the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2014-15 season. He played parts of three seasons with the Canes, recording two points (one goal, one assist) in 28 games from 2014 to 2017. He spent the next two seasons in the AHL with the Charlotte Checkers before signing with the Vegas Golden Knights organization.

Brown scored in his first –– and only –– game with Vegas in the 2019-20 season and did not pick up a point in four NHL games last year. He also had two goals in 12 playoff games last season.

In the AHL, Brown had eight points in nine games last season after a 21-point campaign in 60 games during the 2019-20 season. His best season was his last with the Charlotte Checkers in 2018-19 when he had 35 points in 70 games.

What Brown lacks in scoring he makes up for with leadership. Brown wore an “A” for the Checkers in the 2015-16 season before becoming their captain in the next three seasons. He then donned the “A” again in his first season with Vegas’ AHL team before captaining the Henderson Silver Knights last season. On top of that, he was the captain during his senior season at Boston College in 2013-14.

That brings us to perhaps the most interesting thing about Brown: he continues Chuck Fletcher’s trend this offseason of adding players with Boston College (or just Kevin Hayes) connections. Brown and Hayes played all four years together at BC from 2010 to 2014, winning the National Championship in 2012. Cam Atkinson (junior year) and Brown (freshman year) also overlapped for one season at BC in 2010-11.

With Kevin Hayes and Wade Allison among the Flyers’ injured players and Morgan Frost in the AHL, it opens up a spot for another forward.  Brown looks poised to be that guy as the Flyers’ 12th forward for the season opener after being claimed on Monday. The 29-year-old is listed as a center, winning 25 of 40 faceoffs in his NHL career, but may shift to the left wing with Sean Couturier, Scott Laughton, Derick Brassard, and Nate Thompson down the middle.
