The Philadelphia Flyers and interim general manager Danny Briere is getting right to their summer business. No waiting around to sort out the deals that they need to get done as they have re-signed a young blueliner that was hitting restricted free agency.

Announced by the team on Tuesday afternoon, the Flyers have re-signed defenseman Egor Zamula to a one-year, $775,000 contract.

Zamula, 23, was in the final year of his entry-level deal this summer and was set to become a restricted free agent for the first time in his career. The left-handed blueliner signed his three-year, entry-level contract as an undrafted free agent all the way back in 2018 but the start of the deal slid twice due to Zamula playing for the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen at the time.

Oddly enough, his entry-level contract was signed by Ron Hextall. Wild.

Now in his third regime of Flyers management, the young defenseman is looking to carve out a path to a regular role in the NHL and re-upped with Philadelphia slightly under his $787,500 qualifying offer.

Zamula played a total of 14 games for the Flyers this season, earning four assists total, but spent the majority of his year down with AHL Lehigh Valley where he scored one goal and 19 points in 44 games. Unfortunately he did not participate in the one single round the Phantoms lasted in the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs due to a shoulder injury. According to the team’s release, Zamula underwent surgery on April 10 and he is expected to make a full recovery by training camp this summer.

The young Russian blueliner might not be the key figure on the future of this Flyers blue line, but is someone that fits in with the timeline of younger talent Philadelphia has currently. He isn’t part of the future future but being in the same age range as Cam York, Tyson Foerster, Elliot Desnoyers, and other dudes, makes him a possibility to play substantial minutes for the Flyers next season if they decide to trade anyone older than 25 years old.

At his age, it’s sink or swim and we’ll hopefully find out next season what Zamula can do.
