Porter Martone keeps turning heads for Canada at Worlds

The Philadelphia Flyers rookie had yet another strong performance for Team Canada at the World Championships and he’s playing with the top talent on that team.

After earning three assists in his first two games for Team Canada at the World Hockey Championships in Switzerland, Philadelphia Flyers winger Porter Martone continued showing his flashes of brilliance Monday against Denmark in round-robin play. Martone scored the game’s opening goal early in the third period to break the scoreless tie. He then added an assist as Canada defeated Denmark 5-1 thanks to a four-assist game from Sidney Crosby.

On the opening goal, Denmark looked to clear the puck but Macklin Celebrini kept it in. He then passed it to Crosby. Crosby was at a very difficult angle to score but was able to draw the goalie and defender towards him. The Penguins center then flipped the puck over to Martone who beat the outstretched glove of the Danish goaltender to put Canada ahead.

Martone, who had a high-sticking minor earlier in the game, had a glorious chance seconds earlier to score his first but his attempt towards a wide-open net was blocked by a Denmark player. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Canada thought they scored earlier in the game. However the video review determined it wasn’t a good goal. Celebrini bobbled the puck somewhat at the line, leading to Martone being just ahead of the play and offside.

However, Martone got the secondary assist on Canada’s fourth goal of the game when Crosby, coming around the net, one-handed the puck to Ryan O’Reilly to make it 4-1.

The goal was Martone’s first of the tournament and, with the assist, now gives him five points through three games. Other scorers for Canada included Gabriel Vilardi and Denton Mateychuk as they opened up a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the final frame. Denmark scored midway through the third to make it a little more interesting but O’Reilly’s tally put it out of reach. Denmark pulled the goalie with just under four minutes to go but Canada’s scored late (with Denmark’s goalie in) to make it 5-1. Crosby was named player of the game for Canada.

Martone says playing with Crosby “surreal”

“I think we just stuck with what we needed to do,” Martone told Canada’s TSN after the game. “We’re getting lots of chances, unfortunately that one was offside there in the second. But we talked in the room, just keep wearing them down and one was going to go in. A great pass by Sid there on the first shift and that helped open the floodgates.”

“Yeah it’s pretty cool, two really highly-talented players,” Martone said. “Sid being a childhood hero for me growing up, it’s kind of surreal playing on a line with him. I just try to complement them very well, get to the net and use my frame to make plays and set them up.”

Canada’s next game is slated for Thursday against Norway. The team is undefeated through three games, with the line of Celebrini, Crosby and Martone fitting together like a glove.
