Porter Martone ramps up in Flyers debut

Last night was the moment we\'ve all been waiting for, as the Flyers saw their top prospect graduate to NHLer status, with Porter Martone making his debut on the road in DC.

That debut was, if nothing else, a high-event one, as Martone worked to put aside the surrounding noise -- even if it was overwhelmingly positive -- and settle in on the fly with a new team in the middle of an increasingly desperate playoff push. Those early goings featured a bit of the wrong kind of flash, as he got a couple touches in on his first shift, puck handling in the offensive zone, but then ended his second by getting himself sent to the box for delay of game after he, under no pressure, sent a puck clear over the glass. Now, the good news in that is that, while the Flyers would run into some trouble on the penalty kill later in the game, they were able to kill that one off and put out that fire for Martone. That all but surely lifted a bit of weight off the shoulders, but it was still clear early on that even a player with as much poise and confidence as Martone isn\'t immune to the nerves that crop up in a moment as big as this one.

But with that small hiccup out of the way, Martone\'s game began to settle down, and indeed, he just seemed to get better and better as the game went on (even as the broader temperature of it also went up). He acclimated well to the pace of play at this level, and was able to build nicely as his level of comfort went up. After a bit of a choppy first period, he really got his legs under him on the other side of the first intermission, and looked markedly more comfortable creating on his own and feeding his linemates to keep them buzzing. Martone made a nice play towards the middle of the second period, making a slick handoff in the neutral zone to feed Christian Dvorak in motion, and set up what would ultimately be a good chance on the rush. The looks kept getting closer from there.

Martone got a look very late in the second period with Noah Cates and Matvei Michkov instead of his regular linemates, and they were able to pour on a few good chances to keep the Capitals on the ropes in the waning seconds of the frame. Martone created one good look early in the shift, and then was able to get himself to the netfront, creating a bit of traffic, while Michkov was able to do a bit of wheeling around it, setting Martone up for a prime opportunity on a jam play that just didn\'t quite go their way, despite their best efforts.

Despite not getting that break to go his way on those chances, it was clear that Martone\'s confidence was growing, and he was able to stay around it as the Flyers got into the third period. He was noticeable truly from the jump in the third, as he put in a nice bit of work on the rush on his opening shift. It wasn\'t perfect, as that cross-ice pass attempt to Konency on the fly was broken up, but the Capitals weren\'t able to turn that into a breakout, and instead the Flyers were able to keep possession and get a bit of a cycle going, and it wasn\'t long before a bit of quick puck movement culminated in a goal for Dvorak, to set the tone and get the Flyers back within one. Martone didn\'t get an assist on that play, but it was his work to carry the puck into the zone that kick started things, and got the scoring play in motion.

His game continued to gain in jump from that point, and he followed that up by putting up a stellar individual chance on his next shift, as his line looked to tap into a similar play -- gaining the offensive zone with speed, Konecny returned the favor and got a pass over to a trailing Martone, who made use of his quick release to put a shot in the direction of the net (it did miss, and that\'s something, but it was still a positive almost type of play). The timing wasn\'t all the way there, but it was the right idea, and that\'s the type of confident play that they\'ll want to see him jumping on, and one he\'ll eventually get to converting on.

All in all, this is more or less the debut we might have reasonably expected to see from Martone. It would have been huge to see him explode offensively and come up with a clutch goal to at least force overtime for the team -- a timeliness of production that became something of a hallmark of his game at the college level -- in a game where they really needed it, but that would have been an outsized hope. After all, this has been a hugely hectic few days for Martone, and as exciting as his game is, he\'s still only one player, the adrenaline rush was bound to wear off eventually and bring him back down to earth, and he was going to need some time to get himself adjusted to the league just like everyone else. Martone was contained a bit in this one, but the most encouraging thing to come out of that was the complete lack of visible frustration shown in the face of it, and instead, the dedication to keeping his head down and chipping away at it, finding space as he went and getting some good looks out of it.

Martone showed some really positive flashes in this debut, and left us with reason aplenty for optimism about what he\'ll be able to do when he gets himself completely comfortable at this level. He\'s already made some good strides in that regard, and if he\'s able to keep up this positive momentum, it won\'t be long before we see him able to stack even more dangerous chances, and eventually converting on them, in turn. Sky\'s the limit, still, for Martone, and it will be exciting to see what he\'s able to do over these next few weeks, and beyond.
