Report: Flyers ‘exploring’ goalie market at trade deadline

The Flyers may in for a surprising goalie move at the trade deadline.

The Bobby Brink trade kicked off the Flyers’ Trade Deadline day, and there’s expected to be at least a few more moves in Philadelphia today – namely Rasmus Ristolainen, Nic Deslauriers, and maybe Carl Grundstrom. There could be room for a surprise move or two, though, and it looks like that may come in the form of a goalie acquisition.

On Daily Faceoff’s trade deadline show with Jeff Marek, The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta went into detail on what the Flyers’ plans could be at the trade deadline and touched on a very interesting note.

“The Flyers have already moved Bobby Brink over to Minnesota, but they’ve got a few more irons in the fire. Grundstrom, Deslauriers, Rasmus Ristolainen all in play, and they’re also is some chatter that they are exploring the goaltending market,” Pagnotta said.

Flyers could add goalie at trade deadline

The Flyers being interested in improving the backup position should come as no surprise on its face, but what’s interesting about this potential move is the timing of it all. In a season that has turned out to be uncompetitive, the Flyers aren’t in dire need of upgrading on Sam Ersson right now. This is very much something that could wait until the offseason, and it probably still ends up an offseason task. Still, an improvement in the next four hours or so is certainly on the table, if the right deal comes along for Danny Briere.

Some of the names currently on the market for goaltenders include Minnesota’a Jesper Wallstedt, a promising young goalie who’s stuck behind Filip Gustavsson on the Wild’s depth chart. The price for Wallstedt might be a bit too rich for the Flyers though, especially with quite a few young goalies in the Flyers pipeline. Another name is the Sabres’ Devon Levi, who has been extremely inconsistent in his limited NHL starts over the past few years. That might be all in terms of young, upside goalies on the market this deadline, barring a surprising name that shakes loose this afternoon.

Another name that could be an option as a reclamation project? The Penguins’ Stuart Skinner, who the team is reportedly shopping. Skinner has been one of the worst goaltenders in the sport over the last year and a half, but he’s only two full seasons removed from a .905 SV% in 59 games started for Edmonton. There’s a good goalie somewhere in there, and it wouldn’t be the worst bet for the Flyers to make. Behind Dan Vladar, Skinner could theoretically be sheltered enough to regain some confidence. And, if he doesn’t, it’s a zero-risk situation for the Flyers, as Skinner is on an expiring deal. Acquiring someone like Skinner would be a pure “tryout to be our backup next year” situation, really.

It’s very unlikely that improving on the backup goalie is near the top of the Flyers to-do list today, but it’s an intriguing possibility for the team as we get closer to the 3 PM deadline.
