In case you haven’t heard, the Philadelphia Flyers’ days of playing in a building called Wells Fargo Center are numbered.
Don’t freak out. The Flyers aren’t going anywhere. They’ll still be playing at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
It’s the name of their building that’s changing.
According to Bloomberg, Wells Fargo will remove its name from the side of Wells Fargo Center when its naming rights contract ends next year. Wells Fargo has held the naming rights since 2010.
With this news surfacing, we decided to come up with some suggestions for the new name of The Farg. There are a lot of options, and we didn’t hesitate to get a little creative.
One thing is a near certainty, though. Whatever the new name is, it’s almost certain to end with “Center.” The arena was originally called the CoreStates Center in the ’90s, and was renamed several times since — First Union Center and Wachovia Center were the other names gracing the side of the building.
We kept this in mind throughout our brainstorming process.
IBX Center
IBX would be a logical candidate to take over for Wells Fargo. Dan Hilferty, the governor of the Flyers and chairman and CEO of Comcast Spectacor, served as IBX’s president and CEO from 2010 to 2020, so it would only make sense for him to put his old company’s name on the side of his team’s arena.
The Flyers already wear a blue IBX patch on their home sweaters. Would anyone be surprised to see IBX on their arena too?
Wawa Center
If there are two things that bring the city of Philadelphia together, it’s sports and a good Wawa hoagie. Why not combine them?
Wawa’s meatball parm sandwich? A beautiful mess. Just like the Flyers! Imagine stuffing your face with one while watching Matvei Michkov pull off a Michigan against the dumb Devils or Rangers. It’s really pretty poetic.
First Union Center
First Union Center was perfect for the Flyers. Why? Because it was often referred to as the “FU Center” by the cultured. It would be such a welcome return to glory.
Sadly, it almost definitely won’t happen. Wells Fargo acquired Wachovia — and First Union — in 2008, and they’re packing up. So…
Gopuff Center
Gopuff has been laying people off quite a bit lately, so there’s likely no chance they even have the funds to afford an arena’s naming rights. Still, it’s an option. And it’s a local company! That’s fun.
And instead of being called The Farg, perhaps fans could call it The Puff? Very lame, but not the worst idea.
Broad Street Hockey Dot Com Center
The arena is on Broad Street, and the Flyers play hockey there. It simply makes too much sense.
Do it, Flyers. You won’t.
(They literally won’t.)
