The Flyers closed out their back-to-back on the road on Long Island, facing off against the Islanders in a must-win game to keep their playoff push alive. It wasn’t a perfect showing, but the Flyers came up with a largely commanding effort, and came away with a hard-fought win to put themselves within reach of a playoff spot.

The basics

First period: 13:54- Owen Tippett (Sanheim), 15:01- Alex Bump (Michkov, Cates)
Second period: 2:52- Matvei Michkov (unassisted), 15:37- Jean-Gabriel Pageau (Barzal, Holmstrom)
Third period: 9:16-Travis Sanheim (Michkov, Bump)
SOG: 21 (PHI) – 22 (NYI)

Some takeaways

A commanding start

Coming off of a really disappointing loss to the Red Wings last night, the Flyers would have been particularly motivated to come out with some energy in this game and get their game going early, and the good news here is that this is exactly what they managed to do tonight. The Flyers came out with some serious jump and were pretty immediately able to translate that into some dominance in possession — they were pouring on the chances on the way to a 12-1 advantage in shots by the time the first intermission rolled around.

They were able to capitalize well on this edge in possession as well, as they were finally able to break through in the second half of the frame after a strong start, with Owen Tippett putting up an insane goal to get them on the board, and Alex Bump doubling up their lead just over two minutes later.

All in all, it was just about as strong of a start to this game as they could have hoped to put together, and it worked as a nice tone setter for much of the rest of the game.

Sloppy on the power play

It was pretty close to a perfect first period for the Flyers, but the one area that really took the wind out of their sails was the power play. The Flyers had two chances on the man-advantage in that first frame, really good chances to pull even further away on the scoresheet, but in the end, they were more or less squandered. The Flyers managed to put up three shots on goal across those two attempts, and while they were able to come up with a few good flashes, they struggled more to get set up in the zone and get some sustained possession going. And instead of helping them to keep the ball rolling, those power plays ended up being something closer to momentum killers.

They had built up enough insulation at even strength that this lack of production on the power play wasn’t a killer, but it was still tough to see a group with as much talent at their disposal as they have to work with now still struggling to get it done.

Vladar bounces back

After getting the night off yesterday — and a little bit of extra rest and time to reset after a rougher showing on Tuesday against the Capitals — in this huge matchup for the Flyers, they went back to Dan Vladar for the start, hoping that he could get back to his best form and help keep their season alive. It was a weird game for Vladar, in that he didn’t have a whole lot to do through the first period and much of the second, but once the Islanders woke up, they really woke up, and they were able to put together some major surges, just pouring on the shots while the Flyers defenders scrambled in front. Vladar was dialed in, though, and he was able to put out some fires when they needed him to, in order to keep this game from getting away from them.

It was a huge response effort for Vladar, as he was able to stop one poor game from spiraling into an even more challenging stretch, and this is just what the Flyers needed on the way to this win.

Michkov breaks through

The production slowed down a little bit for the Flyers in the second period, as they lost a bit of energy and the Islanders picked up some steam, in turn, but the Flyers did manage to add to their lead in that middle frame, on a goal care of Matvei Michkov.

This goal was a big one for the Flyers collectively — it would serve as a good insurance goal in the scope of game, on the way to the win — but it was a nice individual boost for Michkov, as well. After all, Michkov had a rough game last time out against Detroit (his whole line really struggled in that one) and rightfully or not, he’s gotten a lot of heat from the outside about his performance. It’s been a challenging year for him, and he still has a ways to go to get back to top form, but this was a good response showing for him, and it was nice to see him get rewarded.

Zegras gets banged up

There was a lot to like about how things unfolded for the Flyers in this one, but there was one scary bit to come out of it. Trevor Zegras took a big hit late in the first period, and it immediately sent him down the tunnel to get looked at. He was able to come back for the second period, but he was used really sparingly throughout the remainder of the game — seeing just 10 more shifts through the final two periods, and those shifts overwhelmingly kept quite short.

He was ultimately able to finish the game, but his status is certainly something we’ll be keeping an eye on going forward.

A huge response

This game wasn’t perfect, it got a little scary for the Flyers at times — particularly that extended 6-on-5 stretch at the end of the game, with the early pull of Sorokin for the Islanders — but it never really felt like they didn’t have control of this one. The Flyers bent at times, but they managed to avoid breaking, and that wasn’t an easy task to pull off on the second night of a back-to-back. They were able to keep on the gas when they needed to, pulling in the right direction, and avoided making too many self-inflicted mistakes and sinking themselves. It was a well-played game, and a major rising to this occasion.

And with this win, the Flyers have put themselves within a point of claiming a playoff spot, and within two of stealing that third place spot in the Metro from these Islanders. Their season is well and truly still alive, and they’re remaining in the driver’s seat.
