Thursday Morning Fly By: Cuts, cuts, and more cuts

Today’s open discussion thread, complete with your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes.

*The Philadelphia Flyers got busy on Wednesday as they did their second round of cuts at training camp. Players that were unlikely to make the final roster to begin with were sent down to the AHL, or sent back to their junior teams. Now, everyone remaining at Flyers camp has a real shot of making the team if things go in their favor. This is where we can have fun conversations. [BSH]

*It’s the first prospect report of the season! It’s all about Cole Knuble’s rapid ascent up the Flyers depth chart and how Yegor Zavragin is doing on his new KHL team. [BSH]

*We had our stomachs in our throats, or whatever that idiom is. Dan Vladar was hurt during the first period of Tuesday night’s preseason game and we were all fearing the worse (multiple months without Dan Vladar playing for the Flyers). But thankfully, last season’s team MVP is considered just day to day and even Rick Tocchet believes the team dodged a bullet. [BSH]

*Speaking of Tocchet, him and his coaching staff are truly overhauling the power play. They’re not looking for any quick fixes or anything. They are committed to making a top unit with both Trevor Zegras and Matvei Michkov on it. They have a whole new setup and a whole new strategy and the youth are leading the way. [BSH]

*We love talking about lineups! The Flyers unveiled some lineups! At practice on Wednesday, the training camp groups were reorganized into the NHL group and the group that was eventually all cut from camp just hours later. So, now we have a pretty clear picture what Tocchet is thinking about when it comes to lines and what we could see to start the season. [BSH]

*We’re continuing our player previews and now we’re taking a look at Jamie Drysdale and Cam York, two very important pieces on the blue line who could take the next step together. [BSH]

*While it was not great to see the Flyers lose 5-1 to the Bruins in their second preseason game, it was a teaching moment. A lot of the young Flyers got a taste of what it is like to play against some real-life NHLers at the top of their game on the second half of a back-to-back. Something that will happen if their dreams come true. [BSH]

*Everyone is watching David Jiricek and he knows it. The young defenseman is hoping to win a regular spot on the Flyers’ blue line and while his waiver exemption status makes it feel like it’s a guarantee he sticks around in the NHL, he still needs to show something to get regular playing time. *The 10 best value contracts in the NHL. Spoiler alert: None of them are on the Flyers. [Daily Faceoff]
