Top 5 Flyers power-play goals of 2024-25 season

They didn’t score a lot on the power play, but sometimes the Flyers looked like they were imposing. Here are five of the better power play goals from the 2024-25 season.

The Flyers had a bad power play. Really bad. Ranked thirty-third out of thirty-two teams bad. That’s bad. Nonetheless, they did score a few more than five power play goals this past season. And some of them were rather nice to watch and rewatch. Here then are the top five power play goals Philadelphia scored over the last 82 regular season games.

5) Matvei Michkov versus Chicago (November 23, 2024)

With the score tied at two, Chicago took a minor penalty in the overtime frame. The four-on-three advantage meant obviously a little more time and space on the ice. And Philadelphia worked it to perfection. Set up in a square around the Blackhawks defending triangle, the Flyers’ Travis Sanheim passed it down to Travis Konecny who was down low. The pass, along with some help from Sean Couturier who took out the Blackhawks defender, left a golden opportunity. Konecny quickly passed cross ice to Matvei Michkov who wasted no time burying the puck for the power play goal and game-winning overtime goal.

4) Tyson Foerster versus Vancouver (October 11, 2024)

Who would’ve thought the Flyers’ first goal of the year would be so pretty and come on the power play? Well, it did. With under three minutes to go in the opening period, and Philadelphia down 1-0 to host Vancouver, Bobby Brink held the puck just over the blueline. He barely gave Tyson Foerster and Joel Farabee time to avoid the play being called for offsides. Brink passed it over to an oncoming Farabee. Farabee immediately passed the puck ahead and back to the other side of the ice to Foerster, who simply had to put his stick on the puck to score. Canucks goaltender Kevin Lankinen didn’t really have a chance to make the stop.

The goal could’ve been a good omen of how strong the power play would turn out, batting 1.000 after one opportunity. But we all know how that played out. Still, it was rather pretty, tic-tac-toe passing play by the trio of Philadelphia forward.

3) Andrei Kuzmenko versus Edmonton (February 22, 2025)

You would’ve sworn the Flyers, who by this time in the season would’ve considered declining the man advantage rather than enduring two minutes of complete inefficiency, were possed by the Oilers forward unit. Was that Draisatl, McDavid and Evan Bouchard on the ice in a Flyers uniform? No, it was Andrei Kuzmenko, Rasmus Ristolainen and Travis Konecny. Oh and with help from Matvei Michkov.

With Philadelphia up 4-3 late in the second period, the Flyers looked loose and relaxed on the power play, not rushing passes but not hesistating in making good, quick decisions. After Michkov and Ristolainen passed it back and forth, Kuzmenko found some space near the top of the faceoff circle. Ristolainen found Kuzmenko, who deftly fed a behind the back pass to Konecny. Konecny then quickly completed the give-and-go to Kuzmenko who deflected the puck behind Stuart Skinner. It was the first goal for Kuzmenko following his trade from Calgary to the Flyers. And it was a nice way to start what became a rather quick stint with Philadelphia.

2) Tyson Foerster versus Washington (February 6, 2025)

Again, you put a talented forward like Matvei Michkov on the ice, he’s bound to bite opponents in the backside. Michkov didn’t factor in scoring the goal or assisting on it, but it was his patience and skill which set things in motion on this goal. After passing to defenseman Emil Andrae, who then fed it over to Travis Konecny, Michkov made a beeline for the net. This made the Capitals defender try to cover Michkov and caved in Washington’s box-shaped penalty kill formation.

After that, Konecny passed it back up to Andrae who got a great slapshot through, leaving Foerster with enough time to get a great deflection on the puck and beyond Capitals netminder Charlie Lindgren. The goal also tied the game up 2-2. Philadelphia later took a 3-2 lead heading into the third but Washington proved to be too much on this night, winning the contest 4-3 in regulation.

1) Morgan Frost versus San Jose (December 31, 2024)

A great way to close the calendar year that was a trying 2024 for the Flyers. With Philadelphia up 1-0 in the first against host San Jose, the Flyers were in constant motion on this power play. Jamie Drysdale and Morgan Frost acted temporarily as point men before Frost decided to head down towards the Sharks net. That opened up some more space before the ensuing goal was executed.

Drysdale then passed the puck near the point to Travis Konecny (who was now in the spot Frost has previously been in). Konecny saw a seam and made a great diagonal pass to Owen Tippett. Tippett then made no mistake, sending a quick but strong pass that Frost put his stick on for a great tap in. The Flyers would score two more goals on the night for an easy 4-0 win. Again, it wasn’t a highlight reel goal, but it showed that a power play unit in motion can be more effective than five guys standing still.
