The Philadelphia Flyers had a monumental 2025 NHL Draft. With nine selections made through the seven rounds, they re-shaped their prospect pool and focused primarily on players with size that also have a hard-nosed competitive edge and some soft skills to go with that physicality.
Leading the draft class, is sixth-overall pick and winger from the OHL’s Brampton Steelheads, Porter Martone.
Enough digital ink has been spilled on the outstanding forward who dominated one of the best developmental leagues in the world, for some people to get a vague sense of the player. But what if we dug deeper? If we tried to really get more of a complete sense of Martone beyond the scouting reports, stat sheets, and anything else?
We have spent a good portion of this season watching and falling in love with Martone, so let’s do some of that together. Over on the Broad Street Hockey YouTube channel, we watched a full game of Martone’s from last season to show his game beyond the highlights. Join us (me, actually, Thomas, and Jacob was there too) as we go over what we notice while watching some more Martone tape.
In case you weren’t aware, we do these all the time over on the Broad Street Hockey YouTube channel. And we will keep on going through the 2025 draft class, as well as older Flyers prospects, to just catch up on them and get even a better understanding of their potential. It’s like co-operative scouting projects. Anyways, if you enjoy watching one or two people watch a hockey game and comment on the small details of a specific player, you should subscribe to the channel.
Overall, when it comes to Martone, the playmaking and passing ability is immediately evident. His innate nature to just be hyper-aware of where every single player is on the ice — both the defensive coverage and where his teammates are and if they are able to get a scoring opportunity — is just on another planet. While his raw tools aren’t overwhelmingly flashy, as in, he isn’t some speedster or unleash a cannon of a shot, his hockey brain takes him so far and it will be what makes him a very good hockey player in the future.
There are specific moments in the game we watched above where all of that is right on the screen; extreme examples.
It’s exciting to have another top-tier Flyers prospect to get excited about, and we’re going to just keep on watching him develop.
