Why health is the biggest factor in a rebuild

Every year 32 NHL teams for the most part enter training camp in tip-top shape and eager to take on the coming season. It’s also the time of the season when there are very few bruises, hardly any bumps and the only ice packs should be near beverages, not bodies. But after the opening faceoff on opening night, the nicks, bumps, sprains, bruises, and cuts begin, leaving the last team standing in June often the ones who have endured the most wear and tear on their bodies.

For the Flyers, this coming season is one of the more anticipated ones in recent memory thanks to the arrival of Matvei Michkov. A Stanley Cup is off in the distance and a playoff spot this season might be a long shot, but the rebuild will continue under general manager Danny Briere. As much as Briere’s plan is logical, sane and reasonable to some segment of the Flyers fan base, his plan only works well if the team he’s steering towards the ultimate goal is healthy. And more than anything else in a rebuild, you have to have a healthy team in order to gauge just what you have, what you don’t have, what you need to remove and what you need to improve.
