Last night marked a huge moment for the Flyers, as after a long and at times arduous regular season, they managed to overcome the bad bits, rallying from behind to a huge win over Carolina to punch their ticket to the postseason.
But despite the fact that the Flyers got a little bit of help heading into that matchup, with the Hurricanes resting a number of their top contributors, this game was far from an easy one. They managed to find some early jump in the first period, but weren’t able to capitalize on it, and instead, one bad breakdown and one unlucky bounce had them in a two-goal hole heading into the first intermission, and a steep hill to climb to get back into this game, against a Hurricanes team that was giving them fits off the strength of their checking game.
Flyers powered by youth as they end playoff drought
It was a difficult situation that they found themselves in, but the team did well to avoid letting frustration creep in and allow their game to go well and truly sideways. They were able to bear down in the second period, and while not quite as commanding in their complete effort, they still kept at it, creating chances as they went and chipping away at it until they started to go their way.

It was Matvei Michkov who broke through in the first half of the frame, putting one away after a slick pass from Denver Barkey to get the team on the board and to put some life back in the building.

And then the Flyers would continue to push, and managed to follow up not even three minutes later, converting on the power play (a notable feat, indeed) as Trevor Zegras put away just about as emphatic as a goal as could be.
Caught in a dogfight, this one would require a shootout to settle, after tightly fought third and overtime periods, and in a moment when the lights were the brightest they’ve been all season, it was meaningful to see the Flyers looking unfazed. Their first three shooters couldn’t get it done, but no matter, in the sudden death situation, Tyson Foerster converted on an excellent shot, and with one more save from Dan Vladar, the rest was history.

This remained a complete team effort, and the players after the game acknowledged it as such, but it’s hard not to recognize this moment as being guided heavily by the work of this team’s young core. There were a lot of positive delivered by the whole of the group, but Foerster’s game stands out in particular when we see him rising to this moment and pushing this season to the next level in a game that we weren’t even convinced that he would be able to participate in just a month ago.
“I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t think he was going to come back,” head coach Rick Tocchet said postgame. “You know, you have the target dates, you know… but he was determined, like I said. A lot of lonely days for him, working out and stuff like that. So yeah, I mean, he just adds that sniper to us, I mean that one hell of a goal. That a, it didn’t seem like there was a lot of room there, goalie looked big, and I don’t know how he found it. It was a great shot.”
The collective effort from this group of young players, in total, was truly one to behold. It wasn’t just one player dragging the team to this point, but we well-working bit of synergy among this group.
“A lot of young guys contributed,” Tocchet went on, “if you look tonight. [Michkov], young kid, gets a goal. Trevor…[Martone] passed to him. Youth passes to youth. Barkey, thought he had a really good [game]. This is stuff that you look at, they’re growing under these circumstances.”
This has been an impressive stretch for the Flyers, to see the team guided so markedly by their next generation of top contributors through so many of these big moments, but also to see how the group is galvanizing as a team.
“We just have to still play the right way and play for each other,” goaltender Dan Vladar said after the game. “We are a really tight group, and I think people can see it on the ice, whether you are a Flyers fan or not, you can see that the Flyers are never going to give up, they’re playing for each other.”
We may be seeing the torch being passed, to some degree, in real time, but that’s taking no strength away from this team as a unit. The kids are rising to this occasion, but whatever they do from here on out, they’re doing it together.
