Flyers vs. Blues: Odds, Predictions, and Picks

The Philadelphia Flyers maintain a five point lead in the Metropolitan Division standings, despite losing the last six divisional matchups. If the inability to get divisional wins becomes a trend, tonight’s game against the St. Louis Blues (and every other non-divisional matchup) becomes that much more important. Here are the numbers:

Odds

Puck Lines

  • Philadelphia -1.5 (+170)
  • St. Louis +1.5 (-205)

Over/Under

  • Over 6 (-102)
  • Under 6 (-118)

Money Line

  • Philadelphia (-135)
  • St. Louis (+114)

Miscellaneous

  • Goals in First Ten Under .5 (+105)
  • Tyson Foerster Over 2.5 SOG (+100)
  • Philadelphia Under 3.5 Goals (-155)
  • St. Louis Under 2.5 Goals (-110)

Predictions

BSH didn’t submit any picks for Saturday’s contest against the Ottawa Senators, and that might have been for the best. The Flyers have had little success this season against their former captain, dropping both of the previous two matchups, and needless to say, there was reason to be skeptical that Saturday night would be any different.

What was the difference maker? Tyson Foerster. Foerster put the entire team on his back, scoring two goals that ultimately kept the game out of the Senators’ reach. He has six goals in five games since being out with an injury, and if we look back to his pre-injury performance, he has nine goals in his last nine games dating back to the end of January. That is a long time to maintain a hot streak, and it becomes even more impressive when you consider that he didn’t miss a step after being off the ice for two weeks.

The only time that Foerster seemed absent was last week’s game against the Washington Capitals. There, the rookie was left entirely off the score sheet despite accumulating 20:26 of ice time.

BSH’s betting success was equally absent. It really felt like the Flyers would springboard off of an impressive win against the Lightning and punch Alex Ovechkin square in the mount. Instead, Ovechkin and nine other Capitals contributed at least one point in a 5-2 upset. After going 0-2 on the night, it is time for BSH to get back on track. Here are our picks:

Picks

Tyson Foerster Over 2.5 SOG (+100)

  • We aren’t entirely sure that TyFo’s scoring success can continue at its current rate. He might be emerging as a the team’s new young superstar, but a one-goal-per-game pace is crazy even for the NHL’s best. With that said, he is unquestionably gaining confidence, and confidence always translates to more pucks being thrown on net. But for Saturday’s slump, Foerster is averaging four shots per game. We are looking for him to get at least three tonight.

Goals in First Ten Under .5 (+105)

  • Both of these teams have exhibited extreme inconsistency in recent weeks. Though they have a combined sixty-three wins on the season, the Blues and Flyers have a combined nine wins over their last twenty total games. Both teams are capable of putting up big numbers on the scoreboard, especially the Flyers whose offense has seemingly returned to its beginning-of-season form, but both teams are also capable of flopping in big moments. For this reason, we hesitate to put any money on the game lines or the Under/Over. Instead, we go to a simpler bet–no goals in the first ten minutes.
