Andrew MacDonald injured, will miss Wednesday’s game vs. Detroit

Andrew MacDonald is out with an upper-body injury and will not play on Wednesday night against the Detroit Red Wings, the Flyers announced. They say he’s day-to-day.

That likely means that defenseman Evgeny Medvedev will check back into the lineup for what will be a pivotal game in the postseason standings. Medvedev hasn’t played in a month.

MacDonald was hurt in the third period when he was crunched into the boards by Pittsburgh’s Tom Kuhnhackl. It was a hit from behind that was not penalized, although there’s some debate on whether MacDonald’s slip just prior to the hit contributed to the injury. Here’s the play:

We won’t automatically assume that this is a concussion or a head injury, but … well, you saw the hit. Considering that it’s Monday and MacDonald has already been ruled out for Wednesday’s game, it seems unlikely that he’ll be ready to step back in on Thursday against Toronto. The Flyers have just four games left in the season.
