Flyers sign former Hobey Baker Award winner Andy Miele, likely to help Phantoms

The Flyers have used free agency to boost the stock of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms these last few years, and Ron Hextall has done that again today, reportedly signing forward Andy Miele to help out the AHL squad.

Miele, 28, is basically an AHL lifer. After winning the Hobey as in 2011 with Miami University, Miele joined the Coyotes organization. He played just seven NHL games that first year and in total since has only played 15 NHL games.

In 355 AHL games with the Portland Pirates and Grand Rapids Griffins, however, Miele has 106 goals and 205 assists. In 75 games with the Griffins a year ago, Miele had 62 points — good for sixth in the AHL. He’ll certainly help the Phantoms, but likely will not do much more.

The Courier Post reports that this is a one-year, one-way contract for Miele (they’d get a link to their report if they didn’t have me blocked on Twitter), which is interesting given his lack of NHL time. It’s probably just a money thing — can’t imagine him sticking on the NHL roster at all here, though.
