That\'s another Flyers-Devils matchup in the books, folks, and it was another exciting one. Last time these two teams met, we saw some slow developing action early in the game turn to a fast paced third frame and a thrilling overtime period, and this time we got... some slow developing action early in the game turn to a fast paced third frame and a thrilling overtime period. Last time it didn\'t ultimately go the Flyers\' way, but this time it did! Everything evens out in the end, it seems. The basics First period: 14:16- Michael McLeod (Bastian, Lazar) Second period: 1:10- Ryan Poehling (Farabee), 2:44- Jesper Bratt (Hischier, Hughes) PPG, 8:19- Ryan Poehling (Konecny, Sanheim) Third period: Scoreless OT: 3:24- Owen Tippett (unassisted) SOG: 26 (PHI) - 26 (NJD) Some takeaways By the numbers This wasn\'t the prettiest of wins for the Flyers, looking at the the big, complete picture. The Devils got the better of the chances, on the whole, at 5-on-5 -- coming away with 55.43 percent share of the shot attempts and a 64.54 percent share of the Expected Goals (2.28 to 1.25). They really kept the pressure on the Flyers, particularly through the later parts of the third period, but the Flyers did well to keep from breaking down to badly and letting this one get away from them. It\'s not a model of play that we\'re particularly hoping to see them replicate time and time again here -- that really feels like pushing their luck -- but we can appreciate seeing them pull it off here. It\'s Ryan Poehling\'s world... On the flip side, while the Flyers didn\'t get the bulk share of the offensive chances in this one, they were still able to make the most of the ones that they did get. They were efficient in closing on their chances, and there was no one more efficient in this one than Ryan Poehling. He spent this one playing alongside Joel Farabee and a mix of Cam Atkinson and Garnet Hathaway, and this was a mix that served him well. Poehling was buzzing tonight, totaling four shot attempts and three scoring chances, and while that wasn\'t the highest mark reached by any of his teammates (that honor goes to Tippett, who had nine shot attempts and four scoring chances) it was enough for him. Ultimately, the Flyers\' regulation scoring charge was made up of Poehling and Poehling, as he picked up both of their first two goals. And while we don\'t expect to see him continuing to convert on chances at the same rate he was this evening, it was nice to see him rewarded for the solid run of play he\'s been on recently. Ersson\'s in again With Carter Hart still dealing with his illness situation, Ersson continues to be leaned on heavily by the Flyers, and he came up big for them again tonight. As we alluded to earlier, it was a pretty busy evening for him, as he faced 26 shots on goal, including 10 high danger shots. Additionally, across all situations, the Devils generated a hefty 3.56 Expected Goals, and Ersson was able to hold them to just two. It wasn\'t his flashiest showing, but it didn\'t need to be. He was solid in his play, and despite a few breakdowns in front of him, all in all, he was able to hold really steady for the Flyers tonight. This one pretty easily could have gotten away from them, but Ersson\'s steadiness was key to them getting this game to overtime in the first place. Where we stand As we take a moment to pan back and look at the big picture before we wrap this thing up for the night, we should note that things are looking... good? It\'s a little less than ideal to give a loser point away, but this was still a huge win for the Flyers against a tough divisional opponent. This win didn\'t push through any real movement in the standings -- with the Rangers ahead of them and the Islanders behind them both winning tonight -- but it did create a bit more separation from the rest of the division and further solidify their second place spot. And this is all good news -- the Flyers have a tough stretch of three games in four days heading into the holiday break, and with the Metro standings as tight as they are right now, there was the potential for things to go sideways for them in a big way if they stumbled badly in that stretch. But this was a big statement win, and puts them in a solid position heading into the back-to-back at the end of the week. All stats via Natural Stat Trick and NHL.com
