Flyers place odd-man-out goalie Felix Sandstrom on waivers

The Flyers placed goaltender Felix Sandstrom on waivers Sunday afternoon. Assuming he goes unclaimed, he is likely to be assigned to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to share starts with Cal Petersen.

Teams will have 24 hours to make a claim for the 26-year-old netminder.

The Flyers’ recent handling of Sandstrom has been peculiar. The club began the season carrying three goalies with Sandstrom primarily watching games from the press box as a healthy scratch. Carter Hart and Sam Ersson have taken on the bulk of the starts thus far, though Sandstrom did dress for a game to serve as Ersson’s backup in a tilt against the Dallas Stars on October 21.

After not appearing in a game for over a month, the Flyers assigned Sandstrom to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for a conditioning stint on Halloween. However, he suffered an upper-body injury in his second game with the Phantoms and has not dressed for a game since.

The Flyers recalled Sandstrom and placed him on injured reserve on November 4, though he has since taken reps with his NHL teammates in practice.

Sandstrom served as Hart’s primary backup last season, posting a 3-12-3 record along with a 3.72 goals against average and .880 save percentage in 20 games. He relinquished the backup role to Ersson in training camp, though, and has yet to carve out a defined role with the Flyers.

Sandstrom is on track to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
