Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments.
Prospects playing in the AHL
The prospect report will be getting a lot lengthier in the coming weeks, as it was announced this week the Lehigh Valley Phantoms will be opening their season on February 6th in Hershey against the Bears (Washington Capitals’ affiliate). Once the AHL gets up and running we’ll be getting some stats on Roddy Ross, Felix Sandstrom, Linus Hogberg, Mason Millman, Wyatte Wylie, Egor Zamula, Wade Allison, Tyson Foerster, David Kase, Pascal Laberge, Tanner Laczynski, Isaac Ratcliffe, Matthew Strome, Maxim Sushko, Zayde Wisdom, and Kirill Ustimenko.
Prospects playing in Canadian junior
Elliot Desnoyers (LW), Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)
2020 5th Round Pick, 135th overall
Desnoyers and Halifax were supposed to return to action this week, but the QMJHL cancelled a pair of their contests. Their next game is slated for January 29th against the Saint John Sea Dogs (shoutout to Samuel Dove-McFalls).
Yegor Serdyuk (RW), Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL)
2019 6th Round Pick, 165th overall
Although he provided six shots on net, with five of them being what the QMJHL regarded as dangerous, Serdyuk couldn’t light the lamp in Victoriaville’s first two games since late November. The pick from two years ago has three points (one goal on 27 shots) in 12 contests in 2020-21.
Prospects playing in Europe
Emil Andrae (LHD), HV71 (SHL)
2020 2nd Round Pick, 54th overall
Andrae had a quiet week in the SHL, as he has three assists and an average ice time of 11:31 a night in 23 games this season.
Adam Ginning (LHD), Farjestad BK (SHL)
2018 2nd Round Pick, 50th overall
- 1/23 – 2 penalty minutes/
Ginning spent a pair of minutes in the sin bin this week in Farjestad BK’s 3-2 decision over Leksands IF. The rearguard has two tallies on 19 shots along with five helpers for seven points, 14 hits, and 23 blocked shots in 32 tilts this year.
Olle Lycksell (F), Farjestad BK (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
- 1/23 – 3 shots on goal, 2 penalty minutes/
Lycksell concluded his fifth straight game without a point this week but he continued to litter the opposing net with shots, as 26 of his 37 shots in 2020-21 have come in his last 13 SHL appearances. The Swede has had four shots tickle the twine and assisted on six others for 10 points in 29 outings this season while working 12:29 a night.
Samuel Ersson (G), Brynas IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall
- 1/19 – 29-save shutout
- 1/21 – 33 saves on 34 shots against, win
- 1/23 – 30 saves on 35 shots against, loss/
It was a busy week for Ersson who only allowed one goal against in his first two appearances before the floodgates opened on Saturday. The puckstopper registered his first clean sheet of 2020-21 as he is up to 10 wins, a .913 save percentage, and a 2.91 goals against average in the SHL this year.
German Rubtsov (C), HK Sochi (KHL)
2016 1st Round Pick, 22nd overall
- 1/19 – 1 shot on goal, 6/12 on faceoffs
- 1/21 – 0/3 on faceoffs
- 1/23 – 1 shot on goal, 0/1 on faceoffs/
The former first-rounder tossed two pucks on net this week and saw his workload at the dot decrease, as Rubtsov now has 11 points (three goals) in 42 appearances this season.
Ivan Fedotov (G), Traktor Chelyabinsk (KHL)
2015 7th Round Pick, 188th overall
Fedotov only saw one puck beat him this week, as he registered an overtime win on Thursday. The 6’8” puck stopper is now 10-6-2 in the KHL this year with a .921 save percentage, 2.23 goals against average, and one shutout.
Matej Tomek (G), SaiPa (Liiga)
2015 3rd Round Pick, 90th overall
In his first start in nine days Tomek put forth perhaps his worst performance in 2020-21 with four goals against in a match he saw less than 15 shots from the opposition. The goalie’s stinker dropped him to 2-7-1 in the Liiga this season with an .896 save percentage and 2.80 goals against average.
Marcus Westfalt (C), Vasterviks IK (HockeyAllsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall
Westfalt had a weird week that featured a uniquely dominant seven-day span on draws that resulted in a 65.8 faceoff percentage. The former late-rounder is now up to a 48.7 percent at the dot with four tallies on 32 shots and seven points in 32 appearances this season.
Prospects playing in NCAA
Cam York (LHD), University of Michigan (Big Ten)
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall
With two nights of work this week York pumped home his second goal of the season while accruing six shots on net and 12 shot attempts.
Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver (NCHC)
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall
- 1/18 – 2 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot, 2 penalty minutes
- 1/23 – 1 assist, 6 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot
- 1/24 – 3 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot/
Despite having 11 of his 25 shot attempts materialize on net this week Brink couldn’t increase his goal total on the season. The Team U.S.A. representative at the latest World Junior Championship is still looking for his first collegiate tally this season as he has five assists and 16 shots on net in 2020-21.
Ronnie Attard (RHD), Western Michigan University (NCHC)
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall
Even though Attard threw 13 pucks towards the opposing cage this week only one managed to be on net. Of his team-leading 116 shot attempts in all situations this year 34 have been on net with two lighting the lamp as part of his eight-point total on the season.
Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota (Big Ten)
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
- 1/21 – 2 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot (8 shot attempts)
- 1/22 – 1 goal, 6 shots on goal, 2 penalty minutes, 0/1 on faceoffs (6 shot attempts)/
Brodzinski and the Golden Gophers smacked around the Arizona State University Sun Devils in a back-to-back this week with a pair of 10-goal performances on Thursday and Friday, as the Flyers’ prospect piled up six shots on Friday with one lighting the lamp. The former seventh-rounder has four tucks on 28 shots in 2020-21 as part of a six-point, thirteen-game campaign to date.
Jack St. Ivany (RHD), Boston College (Hockey East)
2018 4th Round Pick, 112th overall
- 1/22 – 3 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot
- 1/23 – 1 goal, 2 shots on goal, 2 blocked shots (5 shot attempts)/
St. Ivany made his presence known at both ends of the ice this week for Boston College, as he had first goal as an Eagle on five shots while he provided a total of nine shot attempts overall and denied a pair of shot attempts as well. The rearguard has three points in six games in 2021.
Jay O’Brien (C), Boston University (Hockey East)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall
- 1/18 – 3 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot, 5/13 on faceoffs
- 1/22 – 1 shot on goal, 2/3 on faceoffs
- 1/23 – 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 shot on goal, 0/4 on faceoffs/
O’Brien had an active seven days on the JO’B as he tickled the twine once on his five shots on net that came from six attempts overall. The former first-rounder has two goals and two helpers in five appearances this year.
Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota (NCHC)
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall
- 1/18 – 1 goal, 3 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot
- 1/23 – 1 goal, 2 shots on goal, 3 blocked shots
- 1/24 – 2 penalty minutes, 0/1 on faceoffs/
Hain potted two goals on eight shot attempts this season, as he’s up to four goals on 22 shots this year. The pivot also has five points in 15 outings for the Fighting Hawks in 2020-21.
Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth (NCHC)
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
- 1/23 – 1 assist, 2 shots on goal, 1 blocked shot, 10/17 on faceoffs
- 1/24 – 1 goal, 1 shot on goal, 3 blocked shots, 11/17 on faceoffs/
The Bulldogs’ captain picked up a point in each of University of Minnesota-Duluth’s games this week as he also denied four shots in the defensive zone. Cates now has five tucks and seven helpers for 12 points in 15 contests this year.
