Flyers win sixth straight, climb to within one point of first place with win over Rangers

Three Stars

1. Travis Konecny

Konecny was stellar in this one, as he has been all season long. His two point game gets him to the 60 point mark on the season, as he continues to demolish his previous career high. He set up the second goal with a ridiculous cross-ice pass to Jakub Voracek who, although intended for the puck to go to Claude Giroux, found Sean Couturier for the tally.

2. Derek Grant

Oh, hey new guy! Grant was exactly what we expected from him in this game. Strong defensively, and capable of contributing offensively when in the right situation. He helped turn defense into offense by setting up Michael Raffl’s shorthanded goal, and then scored one of his own on a nice move to beat Henrik Lundqvist.

3. Carter Hart

Hart didn’t have to make a ton of saves in this game, but the ones he did have to make were difficult for the most part. He made the big saves when he needed to, and although the second goal was a bit of a weak one, it was overall a very good game for the young netminder.

Answering the bell

1. Can the strong special teams play continue?

Well, for the most part yes! The power play was spectacular, and the penalty kill even added a goal of their own. However overall, the PK struggled mightily against a Rangers power play that has been quite good of late.

2. Can the Flyers continue their streak(s)?

They would and in, for the most part, dominating fashion. These two games were so huge for this team to not only inch closer to the Capitals at the top of the division, but to drastically hinder the Rangers’ playoff chances. It doesn’t get any easier though in the next few games, with the Capitals and Hurricanes on deck.

Play of the game

There were quite a few options to chose from here, but we’ll go with the shorthanded goal which was a thing of beauty.
