Brian Elliott made 35 saves, and Travis Konecny picked up an assist on the Flyers’ only goal, a below-the-goal-line dish to Matt Niskanen in the slot, to keep his season-opening point streak alive.
That’s it. That was all the good that came out of that terrible game of professional ice hockey we all waited until 9 PM to watch.
Philly looked uninspired and, frankly, tired, icing the puck time after time, unable to string together passes or sustain any pressure against a Calgary Flames team that came into the night at 2-3-1, not exactly meeting expectations of the West’s top seed in the early going.
And Calgary didn’t play an extraordinarily strong game, despite putting 37 shots on Elliott, it’s just that the Flyers didn’t do much of anything at all.
The continued struggles of Shayne Gostisbehere and Jakub Voracek, neither of whom have recorded a single point through four games, are now entering the spotlight of this young season.
Jake finds himself, currently, on a third line with Carsen Twarynski and Scott Laughton, while Ghost just looks like another guy out there, nothing close to the dynamic playmaker we’ve seen over the first four seasons of his career. Until those two start looking like some semblance of their former selves, there’s no need to even dive into the worries of fourth line optimization, and the other minutia we’ve concerned ourselves with in the past.
