So, Ivan Provorov, huh?
Let’s consider: as a rookie, he has three goals and 11 points in 26 games. He used to be at just one goal, but 31 seconds changed that in a hurry – and not only tied the game, but won it, too.
Thirty-one seconds. For a 19-year-old.
How special is that for the Flyers? Well, via the Elias Sports Bureau…
Provorov is only the second defenseman in Flyers history, rookie or veteran, to score twice within a minute. The first was Dick Cherry (Don Cherry’s younger brother) on Jan. 26, 1969, near the end of a game against the Penguins.
Cherry’s goals came in 53 seconds, and the second one was an empty-netter. So Provorov is the first Flyers defenseman ever to beat a goalie twice within a minute.
It’s pretty special league-wide, too:
The 19-year-old Provorov is the first rookie defenseman to score two goals in 60 seconds or less since Dec. 15, 1995, when Winnipeg’s Deron Quint tallied twice in four seconds against Edmonton.
Remember Shayne Gostisbehere set a record for the longest point streak by a rookie defenseman with 15 games? Provorov hasn’t exactly set a new record, but he is doing things rookie NHL defensemen haven’t done in over 20 years, and that’s pretty cool, too.
