The NHLPA announced dates for player arbitration hearings on Monday, and we now know that the Philadelphia Flyers will head to their hearing with defenseman Michael Del Zotto on Tuesday, July 21.
At the hearing, both sides will present what they believe is a fair contract for the player. Evidence allowed to be used at the hearing includes the players’ on-ice performance (obviously), relevant injuries and illnesses, the “special qualities of leadership or public appeal” the player offers, and the salary of comparable players. The team’s salary cap position is not admissible as evidence in an arbitration hearing.
An independent arbitrator will then make a decision. We’ll know the result of the hearing — and thus, MDZ’s 2015-16 salary — within 48 hours of its conclusion, according to league rules. The team has the right to walk away from the decision if the salary awarded is north of $3.5 million north of $3,799,887, per TSN’s Frank Seravalli, in which case MDZ would become an unrestricted free agent.
The sides are allowed to negotiate up until the hearing, so it’s possible the hearing never happens.
