Mark Streit to miss two weeks with upper-body injury

UPDATE from Monday night: The Flyers announced on Monday night that Streit will miss about two weeks with an upper-body injury.

The Flyers have five games between now and their five-day Christmas break, so Streit’s absence likely puts him out for all five of those games. Ideally, Streit would return for the Flyers’ game in St. Louis on December 28.

The team has not yet announced any corresponding roster move and currently has just six healthy defensemen, depending on Shayne Gostisbehere’s status. If Ghost can’t play, it seems likely that Nick Schultz, who has not played since November 11, will draw back into the lineup for Wednesday’s game in Colorado, though it’s tough to say for certain until we hear what else is coming.

Oh good, more injuries. The Flyers could be without Mark Streit when they resume game action on Wednesday night in Colorado, according to CSN.

The report says that Streit has a strained left shoulder, although there’s no official word on just how bad the injury could be. Streit left the game against Detroit on Sunday night in the third period and did not return to the ice during overtime.

A Streit injury, coupled with a hand injury suffered by Shayne Gostisbehere on Saturday against the Stars, certainly hurts.

The chief concern is on the power play, where the Flyers have been utterly dominant. Ghost usually plays the point on the top unit while Streit does so on the second unit. Streit filled in that top unit spot with Gostisbehere out on Sunday, so losing both of them could certainly have an impact on Philadelphia’s second-ranked power play.

If neither player returns for Wednesday’s trip out west, the Flyers will have just six healthy defensemen. There’s a chance they’d want to call up somebody for the two-game road trip. We’ll see if that happens.
