Welcome to BSH’s weekly prospect update, where we will be serving up stats and insight on what our homegrown players have been up to. This will include prospects in Canadian Juniors (BCHL, OHL, QMJHL & WHL), Europe (SHL, KHL), and NCAA college hockey. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments.
Prospects playing in the AHL
Tanner Laczynski C), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)
2016 6th Round Pick, 169th overall
Laczynski had a productive first game of the week, picking up assists on Pascal Laberge’s goal and Max Willman’s first of the game, but cooled off on the scoresheet for the weekend games. But fear not, he still generated a couple of nice chances, and is still looking sharp since his return form injury. It’s hard to find too much to be fussed about in his showing this week.
Mason Millman (LHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)
2019 4th Round Pick, 103rd overall
Millman was scratched for the first game of the week, but was able to get back into the lineup for the weekend after Tyler Wotherspoon took an injury on Wednesday. He’s still looking like he’s adjusting to play at the AHL level, but he’s trending in the right direction. He picked up a couple of chances in his two games played, and, if nothing else, looks a bit better still than he did last weekend.
David Kase (LW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)
2015 5th Round Pick, 128th overall
Kase’s first week back from the Flyers was a pretty quiet one—he picked up an assist on Willman’s overtime winner on Wednesday, but the Penguins neutralized him pretty well over the weekend. He still brought some nice jump to his game, but he wasn’t able to break onto the scoresheet in either of those games.
Egor Zamula (LHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)
Undrafted
Zamula had himself a fine week, all in all. He picked up an assist on Ryan Fitzgerald’s goal on Wednesday for his first point of the season, and just continues to look more and more settled at the pro level. His offense wasn’t jumping off the page the rest of the week, but he was steady on the defensive side and a real positive force in transition, so there was still a lot to like.
Linus Hogberg (LHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms
2016 5th Round Pick, 139th overall
The story was similar with Hogberg—he also picked up an assist on Fitzgerald’s goal on Wednesday, but that was just about all there was to speak of in terms of offense from him. His transition game was solid, though, as he was effective in making some nice breakout passes to keep the puck moving up-ice well for his team, so we saw more of his impacts therein.
Wyatte Wylie (RHD), Lehigh Valley Phantoms
2018 5th Round Pick, 127th overall
Wylie was held pointless this week, and overall it really was a pretty quiet stretch of games. He was steady, and we appreciated that about his game, but we didn’t see too much in the way of playmaking or individual offense generated. So it goes.
Zayde Wisdom (C), Lehigh Valley Phantoms
2020 4th Round Pick, 94th overall
Zayde Wisdom has certainly kept his hot streak rolling, as he picked up two more goals and an assist in his three games played this week. He’s continuing to look pretty close to dominant at this level, all things considered, and he’s proving not just to be clutch for the Phantoms in big moments, but also just one of their most consistent forwards in the lineup.
Maxim Sushko (RW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms
2019 4th Round Pick, 107th overall
Sushko was sent back from the Flyers’ taxi squad last week, and got in for one game on Saturday, before being healthy scratched for Sunday’s game. And in the one game he did get this weekend, well, there wasn’t a whole lot going on. By the eye, it wasn’t a poor game, but he was held without a point or a shot on goal, so there wasn’t too much going for him in the way of offense.
Matthew Strome (LW), Lehigh Valley Phantoms
2017 4th Round Pick, 106th overall
It was a similar story for Strome this weekend, who also found himself healthy scratched after his first game back in the lineup after being returned to the Phantoms. He picked up two shots on goal in Saturday’s game, and overall had a pretty quiet evening.
Pascal Laberge (C), Lehigh Valley Phantoms
2016 2nd Round Pick, 36th overall
Laberge seemingly took some kind of injury in Wednesday’s game against the Devils—though we haven’t heard what the issue is or been given a timeline for his return just yet—so that was his lone, abbreviated game of the week. It was a good one though—he picked up his first goal of the season (which felt like it was a long time coming) and continued to show chemistry with Laczynski. Their line was clicking, so here’s hoping Laberge can get back into the lineup with them soon.
Felix Sandstrom (G), Lehigh Valley Phantoms
2015 3rd Round Pick, 70th overall
After being sent back down from the taxi squad early in the week, Sandstrom finally got in for his first game of the season on Sunday, and it was a fine one. He had quite a bit of work to do, as the Flyers gave up 36 shots against on the night, and Sandstrom was able to stop 31 of them. It wasn’t a stellar showing, but for it being his first game of the season, it’s hard to be too fussed about it.
Prospects playing in Canadian junior
Elliot Desnoyers (LW), Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)
2020 5th Round Pick, 135th overall
After being held without a point in last week’s three games for Halifax, Desnoyers saw his offensive game explode in these past two games. He picked up three points and 12 shots across those two games as he put together a pair of just pretty stellar performances.
Prospects playing in Europe
Samuel Ersson (G), Brynas IF (SHL)
2018 5th Round Pick, 143rd overall
Brynas has their season on pause because of some positive COVID tests. They’re scheduled to be back at it again on Friday.
Olle Lycksell (C), Färjestads IF (SHL)
2017 6th Round Pick, 168th overall
Lycksell’s on a definite hot streak right now, and he carried a good bit of momentum with him into Färjestads’ two wins this week. With a pair of assists, this week, he’s up to nine points in his last seven games, and isn’t really showing signs of slowing down any time soon.
Matej Tomek (G), KalPa (Liiga)
2015 3rd Round Pick, 90th overall
- 2/23 – did not play
- 2/24 – did not play
- 2/26 – 4 GA, .75 save percentage
- 2/27 – 0 GA, 1.00 save percentage/
Tomek, now on load from SaiPa to KalPa, got two starts back to back this weekend, and it was a bit of a mixed bag—on Friday, he let in 4 goals on 12 shots and looked shaky, but then on Saturday, he came right back and pitched a 20 save shutout, which was just about as solid of a response as they could have asked for.
Emil Andrae (LHD), Vasterviks IK (HockeyAllsvenskan)
2020 2nd Round Pick, 54th overall
Last week was a quiet one for Andrae, and that seemingly has followed him into his next pair of games. His play, on the whole, was fine, and the defensive side remains pretty solid, it’s just that the offense still isn’t totally coming for him. He picked up a pair of shots in each of his games played, but that’s all we’ve got.
Marcus Westfalt (C), Vasterviks IK (HockeyAllsvenskan)
2018 7th Round Pick, 205th overall
And just like that, after 15 games without a point, Westfalt’s offense is going again. He only got in for two of Vasterviks’s four games this week, but he picked up four points over those two games, and just brought a pair of really solid showings, and we’re hoping he’ll be able to carry that with him into next week.
Prospects playing in NCAA
Cam York (LHD), University of Michigan (Big Ten)
2019 1st Round Pick, 14th overall
Well would you look at that, another solid weekend for Cam York. He got himself on the scoresheet in Michigan’s series against Arizona State University, picking up an assist on Matty Beniers’s second goal in Friday’s game. So York was able to kick in some offense, but overall it was a pair of well rounded performances—his defensive game was solid as well, and he was good in transition as well. Overall, a lot to like.
Bobby Brink (RW), University of Denver (NCHC)
2019 2nd Round Pick, 34th overall
After a week off, it was a pretty quiet week for Brink in Denver’s return to action. Brink picked up a primary assist on Cole Guttman’s first goal of the game on Saturday, and tacked on two shots, to boot. It wasn’t his most explosive performance, but it was still a fine week for Brink.
Ronnie Attard (RHD), Western Michigan University (NCHC)
2019 3rd Round Pick, 72nd overall
Western Michigan closed out their regular season with a sweep of Miami and extended their winning streak to five games, and Attard was a huge key to that. He was little short of dominant in these two games—he picked up another power play goal on Friday, and sent the shot in from the point that Paul Washe deflected for his power play goal, and then tacked on three more points on Sunday (just one assist on the power play). But it wasn’t all offense for Attard this weekend, his defensive details were really sharp and his impacts in transition were pretty remarkable. He was named the NCHC defenseman of the week for the third time this season, and it certainly felt deserved.
Bryce Brodzinski (RW), University of Minnesota (Big Ten)
2019 7th Round Pick, 196th overall
Minnesota’s series against Penn State was cancelled this weekend, as Penn State continues to deal with a COVID outbreak among their Tier 1 personnel. They’re set to be back in action this weekend against Michigan.
Jack St. Ivany (RHD), Boston College (Hockey East)
2018 4th Round Pick, 112th overall
- 2/26 – 2 SOG, 1 blocked shot/
Boston College had a light weekend, with just one goal on the schedule against UMass, which they lost in overtime. It was a quietly solid game for St. Ivany, though, as he picked up a couple of chances but saw his offense limited, but still came up big for BC on the defensive side.
Jay O’Brien (C), Boston University (Hockey East)
2018 1st Round Pick, 19th overall
Jay O’Brien just can’t slow down. He’s really hit his stride with the Terriers, and he continued his strong play into their split against Merrimack this weekend. He picked up three assists on the weekend and extended his points streak to five games. Not too shabby.
Gavin Hain (C), University of North Dakota (NCHC)
2018 6th Round Pick, 174th overall
- 2/26 – 2 SOG/
It was a light weekend for North Dakota, as they just had the one game on the docket. Gavin Hain was held pointless, but picked up two shots on goal in North Dakota’s 4-2 win over Omaha.
Noah Cates (LW), University of Minnesota-Duluth (NCHC)
2017 5th Round Pick, 137th overall
- 2/27 – 2 assists, 3 SOG/
Great news folks! It was a solid game for Noah Cates and UMD on Saturday—they picked up a tidy 5-1 win over St. Cloud State and Cates snapped his points drought and he came out of this one with two assists, bringing his season points total up to 18 in 23 games.
