Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists as the Penguins defeated the Flyers by a final score of 7-1 on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh in a game that wasn’t really even that close.
Pittsburgh raced out to a 4-0 first period lead, but never really looked back after Justin Schultz’ opening tally just under six minutes into the game. They dominated the first 20 minutes and didn’t receive much push back from the Flyers until the third period when things were far out of reach already.
If you’re interested in more details of this one, they’re below though I warn they aren’t pretty.
No scoring in the first five minutes save for a couple good chances for the Penguins, though they either missed the net entirely or were turned aside by Brian Elliott. Michael Raffl had the first chance for the Flyers, but his rising backhand bid was shrugged off by Matt Murray.
First of the night would belong to the Penguins, though, as Justin Schultz made it 1-0 with a point shot to beat Elliott as Bryan Rust provided the screen 5:57 in.
It wouldn’t be long before the Penguins would extend their lead with Jared McCann making it 2-0, ending what was a mess of a defensive zone shift for the Flyers.
The massacre wasn’t over yet with Dominik Simon doing the honors off a nice setup from Sidney Crosby to make it 3-0 Pens and three goals within 2:49. Not even 10 minutes gone in the first and the Flyers located a massive deficit.
After notching his 100th career point against the Flyers on the Simon goal, Crosby added on his 42nd goal against the Flyers to make it 4-0 with more than five minutes left in the first.
At least the Pens didn’t score again in the period? But neither did the Flyers.
The Flyers had a shot to get on the board after the Pens took a too many men penalty late in the first, but three shots weren’t enough to penetrate Murray on the ensuing power play. Making matters worse was a quick slashing call to Robert Hagg.
Crosby would give the Flyers another shot on the power play later in the period, but the best chance from James van Riemsdyk was snuffed out by Murray as we hit 6:30 left in the second and still 4-0 Pens.
Not long after JVR and Vorobyev hooking up on a near goal at one end, the Pens made it 5-0 at the other end with Jake Guentzel doing the honors by poking one past Elliott with 3:20 left in the second.

The third would start off much better as the Flyers would end Murray’s shutout bid thanks to Oskar Lindblom. His sixth of the season from Sean Couturier and Shayne Gostisbehere made it 6-1 with 18 minutes left.
Also Carter Hart relieved Brian Elliott, though the veteran wasn’t all responsible for the sizable deficit the team in front of him strongly contributed to.

That’d be all she wrote as the Flyers fall by a final of 7-1 in Pittsburgh thanks to a late goal from whatever a Dominik Kahun is.
