Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Dallas Stars
After an overtime win for the Lightning on Friday night, we were right back at it last night for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, and it was do or die time for the Stars, looking to stave off elimination. And they came out with some jump and, after a strong penalty kill showing early in the period seemed to help them gain some momentum, picked up the lead late in the period with a goal by Corey Perry.
The Lightning picked up some steam in the second period, and were able to tie things up early on, when Ondrej Palat got moving on the rush and made a power move around Anton Khudobin to slip the puck past him. They extended their lead in the third period, when a shot by Mikhail Sergachev through traffic made its way past Khudobin, and we started to think that maybe the Lightning had this one locked down. But not so, as it turned out. The Stars had some more pushback in them, and Joe Pavelski tied things with just under seven minutes left in the period. The Lightning got a couple more looks late in the third, but they couldn’t get anything past Khudobin. And to overtime we went! Again…
There were a fair few great chances to go around, but it took until the second overtime to wrap this one up. The Lightning had dominated through most of the first overtime period, but the Stars rallied back in the second, and in the end, it only took one good chance in close to the net, and it was Perry again who was able to chip this puck home as we neared the midpoint of the period. That sealed the win, and guaranteed the Stars the chance to fight another day. Game 6, here we come!
