Phantoms defenseman Christian Marti signs with Swiss team

ZSC Lions of Switzerland’s National League A announced today that they’ve signed Phantoms defenseman Christian Marti to a three-year contract.

Funny thing about that, though: Marti has another year remaining on the entry-level deal he signed with the Flyers a year ago.

Marti, 23, had a rough season in the American Hockey League this year — his first and what appears will be his only season as a player in North America. He wound up playing just 27 games for the Phantoms after recurring problems with his shoulder and never really had a great shot at becoming a standout player.

Marti apparently came to North America with the sole purpose of trying to make a go of an NHL career, but even when healthy Marti was stuck among a log jam of defenseman in Lehigh Valley.

The Flyers could place Marti on unconditional waivers for purposes of terminating his contract, and that’ll be the end of his time in the organization.
