Do you approve of the job the Flyers’ leadership is doing?

We’re one month and 11 games into the Flyers’ season, and so far things feel … not that different? Sort of different? Depends on who you ask, which is why we’re asking you. In particular, we’d like to know: how do you feel about the jobs that the two guys tasked with turning this team around are doing?

Chuck Fletcher was brought in almost a year ago at this point to replace Ron Hextall when it became clear that ownership did not trust him to push this team forward out of the muck it’s been in for seven or so years. And Alain Vigneault was named head coach back in April by a front office hoping he can get the most out of a roster that it felt needed an established veteran coach.

A month in, the results are mixed. The Flyers enter tonight’s tilt with the New Jersey Devils at hockey-.500, which is to say, 5-5-1. They’re coming off of probably their two worst all-around showings of the season in losses to the Islanders and Penguins, and they currently sit five points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference (though most of the teams ahead of them have played more games than them). There have been flashes of brilliance and outstanding play, with other spurts of ineffectiveness and bad performance.

Given that, you tell us: are the general manager and head coach currently performing to your satisfaction?

We’ll start with the guy who we’ve known for a bit longer, Chuck Fletcher. Evaluating general managers in-season is tough, particularly this early in the season when meaningful trades don’t really happen and the only thing a team can typically do to change up a roster is make some call-ups. But Fletcher’s shown a willingness to do that, and he’s had an itchy trigger finger when it comes to calling up and sending down players when things aren’t working — in fact, he did so just yesterday, when he called up three players from the Phantoms and sent two others down.

The guy behind the bench is the one we’ve had a bit less time to know, but Alain Vigneault has certainly had an interesting first month behind the bench with this team. Under him, a roster fairly similar to the one the team had last year has posted some strong underlying numbers at 5-on-5, but has been subject to defensive problems not unlike ones we’ve grown familiar with. He hasn’t been afraid to say some things that go against the grain, praising the team’s performances after some rough losses earlier in the season (such as against Edmonton and Dallas) while not being shy about suggesting he needs more from the team’s best players.
