This season, I am manually tracking both zone entries and zone exits for the Philadelphia Flyers. These statistics help to better understand the team’s play in all three zones, and to illuminate the reasons for both strong and poor performances.
Thus far, we’ve used the numbers to highlight Evgeny Medvedev’s strong neutral zone play, determine whether there could be an underlying reason for Medvedev’s scratching, note the team’s recent zone entry struggles, and pinpoint Brandon Manning’s biggest weakness. But tracking these statistics is time-consuming, making it impossible to post the updated numbers after every game.
As a result, I’m going to try to release updated data once a week. The data is limited to five-on-five situations. These posts will not be for analysis – simply a data dump to give our readers a better understanding of both individual and team performance.
In addition, I’ve included a glossary at the end of each section, so that all of the tracked statistics are clearly defined.

Glossary
Total Entries – the number of times that a player successfully gained entry into the offensive zone
Failed Entries – the number of times that a player attempted to gain entry into the offensive zone and was unable to do so (Ex. turnovers at the blue line, offsides, failed chip-and-chase/icings)
Controlled Entry Percentage – the percentage of a player’s successful entries that came with possession (Ex. carry-ins, completed passes to a teammate)
Unsuccessful Entry Percentage – the percentage of a player’s total attempted entries (total entries and failed entries) that did not result in a successful entry into the offensive zone
Entries Per 60 – the number of successful entries for a player per sixty minutes of 5v5 ice time

Glossary
Total Defensive Zone Touches – the number of times that a player had unquestioned possession of the puck in the defensive zone
Successful Exit Percentage – the percentage of defensive zone touches that resulted in the puck successfully exiting the defensive zone
Controlled Exit Percentage – the percentage of defensive zone touches that resulted in the puck successfully exiting the defensive while possessed by a Flyers player, either by the player carrying the puck out of the zone or passing the puck to a teammate
Turnover Percentage – the percentage of defensive zone touches that resulted in turnovers back to the opposition (Ex. failed clears, intercepted passes, misplays of the puck)
Exits Per 60 – the number of successful defensive zone exits by a player per sixty minutes of 5v5 ice time

Times Targeted – the amount of instances when a Flyers defenseman was directly targeted by an opposing player as he attempted to gain access to the offensive zone
Controlled Entry Allowed Percentage – the percentage of targets that resulted in a controlled zone entry for an opponent, as the defenseman was unable to break up the rush or force a dump-in
Uncontrolled Entry Allowed Percentage – the percentage of targets that resulted in an uncontrolled zone entry for an opponent, as the defenseman was able to force the opponent to dump the puck into the zone
Break-Up Percentage – the percentage of targets that resulted in an unsuccessful zone entry for the opponent, due to the defenseman disrupting the play entirely
Targets Per 60 – the number of times a player has been targeted on a zone entry attempt per sixty minutes of 5v5 play
