R.J. Umberger was the biggest pleasant surprise of the season’s first two games for the Philadelphia Flyers. Following offseason surgery, Umberger looked rejuvenated – a faster, more aggressive forward and a far cry from the slow and ineffective player of 2014-15.
But after returning from an early injury, Umberger’s performance began to slip. And unfortunately, the embattled forward is now banged up once again.
The Flyers announced this morning that Umberger will miss 1-2 weeks with a lower-body injury.

Against Winnipeg last Saturday, Umberger was pummeled in a fight and limped off after blocking a shot late in the game. Since the injury was designated as “lower-body,” it’s likely that this issue is due to the latter incident.
With Pierre-Edouard Bellemare not quite ready to return from his own lower-body injury, Vincent Lecavalier will remain in the lineup for tonight’s game against the Washington Capitals. Presumably, when Bellemare returns, either Lecavalier or fellow frequent scratch Sam Gagner will exit the lineup.
