Ron Hextall to be named Flyers general manager; Paul Holmgren ‘promoted’ to president

Ed Snider said last Friday that yes, Ron Hextall will be the Flyers general manager. “But that doesn’t mean tomorrow,” Uncle Ed said. More like four days.

The Flyers will hold a press conference at 11:30 a.m. today to “announce front office changes.” Teams don’t hold press conferences to make front office changes unless those changes are major ones, and with several other teams undoubtedly interested in Ron Hextall for their open general manager positions, it seems like this needed to happen to keep him in Philadelphia.

They’ll call it a promotion to team president, and he will still have a say, but it seems like Paul Holmgren was not-so-subtly forced out of his job. On Friday, here’s what Homer said when asked if he wants to be general manager next season with regards to the potential promotion of Hextall.

“Yes. I’m the one who brought Hexy back. He’s an excellent resource in our organization. He’s a tremendous hockey man and I have no question that he’s ready to be a general manager at any point. We’ll see where that goes, but I’m certainly not in any position today where I want to change chairs.”

We’ll see exactly what unfolds at the 11:30 a.m. presser, and we’ll have much more throughout the day, but this is the expected news.
