Round three of Flyers’ roster cuts, and it’s a bigger one

Two days after cutting 2017 first and second round draft picks Morgan Frost and Isaac Ratcliffe, the Flyers made their most transactions thus far by cutting a total of eleven players from their training camp roster.

That list includes Colin McDonald, David Kase, Zach Palmquist, Reece Willcox, German Rubtsov, David Drake, Frank Hora, Mike Vecchione, James de Haas, Connor Bunnaman, and the newly signed Yegor Zamula. More on him signing his entry level contract here.

Everybody, except for Zamula who was assigned to the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, will be joining the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for the 2018-19 season.

Like all the cuts prior, none are all too surprising. The player who had the best chance to make the team out of this group was probably Vecchione, although Willcox and Rubtsov were also talked about here and there.

This leaves just eight healthy defenseman on the roster, eleven total when you include Travis Sanheim, Andrew MacDonald, and Samuel Morin, and of the eight, the non-locks still hanging around are T.J. Brennan, Philippe Myers, and Mark Friedman. It seems likely that at least one of them will make the team out of camp, although it’s not absolutely necessary.

There are a ton of forwards left, twenty five in total, and the non-locks with the best chance to make the team would be Mikhail Vorobyev, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Cole Bardreau, and Corban Knight. Others like Tyrell Goulbourne and Danick Martel seem to be on the outside looking in.
