Sam Gagner clears waivers, sent to Lehigh Valley Phantoms

The 24-hour waiver period has come and gone for Sam Gagner and the Philadelphia Flyers, and the forward has gone unclaimed. He’s been sent to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

With Gagner off the Flyers books, they’ll save $950,000 of the $3.2 million against the salary cap, making his cap hit $2.25 million. The move allows the team to keep defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere in Philadelphia, and it was necessitated by the impending return of defenseman Mark Streit to the Flyers lineup. Streit has also been activated off injured reserve.

Now, the question: will Gagner return to Philadelphia this year, or is his Flyers career over? Time (and injuries) will tell.
