Sean Couturier might just need some more time

Philadelphia Flyers captain Sean Couturier was a healthy scratch in his last two games, but his recent play that led to said scratchings does not speak to the player he has been this season and what he can be in the future. At 31 years of age, he is still a solid player.

Couturier missed half of his 2021-22 campaign and his entire 2022-23 season after suffering multiple injuries and undergoing back surgery. It’s almost a miracle that he has played this season, if anything.

The Flyers captain is in his second season of a contract that carries a $7.75-million cap hit and keeps him in Philadelphia through the 2029-30 season. At this point, giving up on him is a non-option. He has time to figure things out, and that might be all he needs to find a return to early-season form or, potentially, close to what he was in his prime.

Couturier’s positive strides

This season has actually been a solid one for Couturier. Just looking at some basic stats, he has 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points in 64 contests. Twenty-seven of those points have come at even strength and two of them are shorthanded, so he’s still producing without having to rely on the power play to boost his numbers.
