FlyperBlog: Should of kept Martel

The Flyers have always had issues with moving on from players too soon. The list is endless.

It’s a veritable all-star team. The Should Have Kept roster could beat most modern NHL squads. Well, you can add one Danick Martel to the list. Martel, popularly known to his teammates as “The Orange Viper” and “Danicky”, was claimed on waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning just before the start of the NHL season.

Ron Hextall, what were you thinking?

Hextall’s decision to let the speedy young forward go shows just how insane this organization has become. Ed Snider would be ashamed. If this club would focus more on retaining talent and less on creating hideous googly eyed distractions, perhaps the Philadelphia Flyers would be lifting their first Stanley Cup since the days of disco.

Instead, Danick Martel is in Tampa Bay, admiring the likes of Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov. Martel will get his time to shine soon, and will leave the Flyers saying the age old phrase, “We should have kept him.”

After all, that’s what they said about Patrick Sharp.
