Thursday Morning Fly By: In the desert

© Kyle Ross-USA TODAY Sports

*The Philadelphia Flyers pulled off a swift little transaction on Wednesday, sending Noah Cates to the Injured Reserve list as he heals from his lower-body injury, and recalling Olle Lycksell, who has been playing pretty well in Lehigh Valley. Will Lycksell get playing time? Who knows. [BSH]

*Lycksell appears to be, and at least said it out loud, that he is much “more comfortable” this time around with the Flyers. It isn’t a cup of coffee for eight games like last season, but something he can build on. [Inquirer]

*Flyers alumni game against the Boston Bruins is just one part of a can’t-miss weekend. [NBCSP]

*If the Flyers are going to successfully rebuild and become perennial contenders, the AHL Phantoms are going to play a massive part. [AHL dot com]

*In league news, the Edmonton Oilers were once drowning at the bottom of the league standings, and have now won five consecutive games and are really roaring to be back in the playoff race. That feels crazy. [Sportsnet]

*Filip Forsberg sat down with ESPN to talk about not being able to meet Lionel Messi, the NHL All-Star Draft returning, and Nashville hot chicken. [ESPN]

*It didn’t look great for the Carolina Hurricanes as star Andrei Svechnikov went down and required knee surgery, but now he is back and is “only going to get better.” [NHL dot com]

*It’s official: The NHL is bringing the 2024 NHL Entry Draft to Las Vegas and their silly-looking The Sphere. [NBC Sports]

*And finally, the New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks faced off on Tuesday night and it made the Hughes brothers join an exclusive club of having three or more brothers play in the same NHL game. Only nine other families have had this happen before, and most recently the Staals with Eric, Jordan, and Marc. [DailyHive]
