An almost-daily look back at how the Philadelphia Flyers have fared on this day, recalling some of the more memorable moments, achievements, and events that shaped the organization throughout the club’s storied history
Even though they have won just once in their last seven games played on this day (1-4-1-1 from 2000-2011), the Flyers have still managed to compile a 9-7-2-1 all-time record in 19 November 26 outings heading into tonight’s matchup with the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. The teams have met one other time on this day, skating to a 1-1 deadlock at the Spectrum in 1969.
1967 — Gary Dornhoefer, Leon Rochefort, Earl Heiskala, and Bill Sutherland each scored one goal and assisted on another, while Bernie Parent stopped 25 of 27 shots in a 7-2 drubbing of the Los Angeles Kings at the Spectrum.
Pat Hannigan, Garry Peters, and Joe Watson also lit the lamp for the Orange-and-Black, as the seven goals scored set their franchise-high total at that point in their inaugural season. Their previous best had been five, scored against the California Golden Seals on October 22.
The win was Philadelphia’s fourth in a row — which just so happened to coincide with Parent stringing together four consecutive starts — and extended their unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1).
1969 — Philadelphia’s Bill Sutherland and Detroit’s Gary Bergman traded first period goals, but the big story of the game was Bernie Parent’s 37 saves to secure a 1-1 draw with the Red Wings at the Spectrum.
1975 — Reggie Leach and Rick MacLeish each scored a pair of goals and Wayne Stephenson made 21 saves as the Flyers belted the Atlanta Flames by a 7-3 score at the Spectrum.
Leach, Don Saleski, Bob Kelly, and MacLeish all beat Phil Myre during a second period in which Philadelphia outshot the Flames, 21-8. MacLeish, Leach, and Orest Kindrachuk all scored in the final frame to douse the Flames.
Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, Gary Dornhoefer, and Ross Lonsberry all chipped in with a pair of helpers.
1976 — Bobby Clarke scored once and set up two other Flyers’ goals and Bernie Parent turned aside 34 of 36 shots in a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies at McNichols Sports Arena.
Jim Watson, Rick MacLeish, and Bill Collins — who with a goal and an assist posted the only two points he would register in a Philadelphia uniform — also scored for the visiting Flyers.
Parent had to be on top of his game as the Rockies outshot Philly in each period, and by a 36-23 total for the contest. The 31-year-old goalie improved his season record to 10-7-3 after missing all but eight games during the previous season with a neck injury.
1983 — Brian Propp, Tim Kerr, and Darryl Sittler each posted a goal and an assist, and Pelle Lindbergh made 33 saves en route to a 5-4 triumph over ‘King’ Richard Brodeur and the Vancouver Canucks at Pacific Coliseum.
Mark Howe gave Philadelphia a quick 1-0 lead just 26 seconds after the opening faceoff, but Stan Smyl tallied twice to give the home team a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.
Goals by MacLeish, Propp, and Kerr gave the Flyers a 4-2 lead heading into the final stanza, before Sittler notched the eventual game-winner via the power play with 8:09 remaining in regulation.
1986 — Brad McCrimmon’s shorthanded goal 1:10 snapped a 1-1 tie and Peter Zezel’s marker 52 seconds later proved to be the eventual game-winner in a 4-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at the Spectrum.
Rick Tocchet and Ilkka Sinisalo also scored, while Brian Propp and Ron Sutter added a pair of helpers apiece.
Rookie Ron Hextall stopped 27 of 29 shots to win for a third consecutive outing and remaining undefeated in six (5-0-1), and improved his season mark to 13-3-2.
1993 — Brent Fedyk scored two goals and Tommy Soderstrom turned away all 27 shots he faced to post his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 whitewash over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Spectrum.
Fedyk beat Daren Puppa early in the second period and again midway through the third to give Philadelphia a 2-0 lead, before Garry Galley added an empty-netter with nine seconds remaining and Puppa pulled in favor of an extra attacker.
The ice was tilted in Soderstrom’s direction for much of the final stanza as Tampa outshot the Flyers, 12-4, but the diminutive Swede held on for his sixth career shutout.
1997 — Rod Brind’Amour scored twice in the first period and Garth Snow stopped 26 of 27 shots to lead the Flyers to a 3-1 triumph over the Buffalo Sabres at Marine Midland Arena.
Eric Desjardins provided an insurance goal late in the middle stanza, before Michael Peca ruined Snow’s shutout bid 5:06 into the final period. Chris Therien added a pair of assists in the win.
1999 — Mark Recchi’s goal with 52 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs after the team blew a 2-0 lead late in regulation at the First Union Center.
Goals by Eric Lindros and Eric Desjardins staked Brian Boucher to a two-goal lead late in the third, but Mats Sundin spoiled Boucher’s shutout bid with 2:24 left and Sergei Berezin knotted the score with just 12 seconds remaining to force the extra session.
Both Desjardins and John LeClair added a pair of assists.
2003 — Eric Chouinard’s late second period goal tied the game at 1-1 and Pittsburgh goaltender Sebastien Caron made sure it stayed that way despite the Flyers dominance over the last 25 minutes in a 1-1 deadlock with the Penguins at the Mellon Civic Arena. The tie made it 10 straight games without a loss for Philadelphia (8-0-2).
Dick Tarnstrom staked the Pens to a 1-0 lead on a power play in the last minute of the first period, and the Flyers struggled to break through Caron until he misplayed a clear and put the puck directly on Chouinard’s stick to knot the score late in the middle frame.
Philadelphia dominated the third period by outshooting Pittsburgh, 14-2, and then 6-1 in overtime before having to settle for the draw.
Robert Esche made 19 saves to improve to 6-0-1 in his last seven decisions.
2008 — Matt Carle snapped a 1-1 tie early in the third period and Simon Gagne scored twice and figured in on all three Philadelphia goals in a 3-1 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes at the RBC Center, making it six straight victories for the Orange-and-Black.
Carle’s game-winner came during a four-on-four sequence in which he was headed to the bench for a change, but instead found himself as part of a three-on-one odd-man rush. Gagne sent the puck across, and Carle blew it past Cam Ward high over the glove side to put the Flyers ahead to stay. Rookie defender Luca Sbisa also drew an assist on the play to pick up his first point in 10 contests.
Antero Niittymaki made 27 saves to pick up the win.
2010 — Nikolay Zherdev and James van Riemsdyk scored second period goals to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead heading into the third, but Steve Staios knotted the game midway through the third and Rene Bourque provided the shootout-winning goal against Sergei Bobrovsky in the sixth round in a 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames at the Wells Fargo Center.
