Trade deadline open thread

Oh, one of the most exciting days when it comes to hockey transactions is here! It’s the NHL’s trade deadline and after 3:00 p.m. ET today, no more trades can be made.

Even though we have already seen Sean Walker get traded to the Colorado Avalanche and Nick Seeler signed to a four-year contract extension, our Philadelphia Flyers might still be active! Hey, they even acted as a financial broker to make the Noah-Hanifin-to-Vegas trade work and got a fifth-round pick for it.

Outside of Philadelphia, today might be wild as well. Still plenty of big-name players and talent for teams to either trade way too much for or give up barely anything and people get to clown on the selling team for at least a few days.

It should be a fun time, so let’s hang out and not think about work. It’s Friday anyways, what else do you have to do? Fill out that paperwork? Send that email? Don’t do it and let’s talk puck as transactions swirl around us.

Transactions

Chad Ruhwedel to the Rangers
Two stupid teams trading with one another. Penguins send a depth defenseman that is very cheap to the Rangers for a 2027 fourth-round pick. One of those deals that only people who like a team that plays in a train station will care about.

Tyler Toffoli to the Jets
Oh, here we go. The Devils start their teardown officially by giving up the pending unrestricted free agent to a Cup-hopeful Jets team. Even though we might not personally believe in Winnipeg (too stinky), all they are giving up is a 2025 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick. He fills a scoring role on a team that needs some more help with that, and they could ultimately keep him.

Ben Meyers to the Ducks
No one should care about this. Former college free agent forward goes to a crappy team for a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft. Cool.

Kyle Okposo to the Panthers
Okposo might be the leading contender for Old Guy Gets His Stanley Cup this season. He now gets to enjoy his time in sunny Florida and in exchange, the Sabres will take an AHL dude and a conditional seventh-round draft pick that upgrades to a fifth-rounder if Okposo gets his name on the Cup.

Evgeni Kuznetsov to the Hurricanes
Well, Carolina got a little bit deeper but are taking a massive risk. They are taking on 50 percent of Kuznetsov’s contract and gave up a 2025 3rd-round pick to do it. He will still carry $3.9-million cap hit through next season, and is that worth it? He might just be completely washed.

Malcolm Subban to the Blue Jackets
Hey, a goalie! Subban will head down to the AHL for Columbus and all they had to give up was future considerations. We love a transaction for the sake of making a transaction.
