Tye McGinn’s the second player in our Top 25 Under 25 series with a hockey-playing brother more famous than himself. And sooner than later, he could wind up having two brothers more famous than he.
His 18-year-old brother Brock was drafted 47th overall this past June by the Carolina Hurricanes, considerably higher than the 119th overall selection the Flyers used on Tye back in 2010. Brock is just beginning his third season as a winger and assistant captain with the OHL’s Guelph Storm, but to date he can’t quite boast the same offensive numbers his brothers, Tye and Jamie, put up during their junior careers.
The 24-year-old Jamie has over 200 games across parts of four NHL seasons under his belt, having played with both the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche since breaking into the league during the 2008/09 season. Jamie and Tye each had comparable numbers as junior players, but can the 22-year-old Tye turn into an NHL success story with his Flyers like his older brother has out west?
McGinn played his final junior season two years ago in 2010-11 as an over age 20 year old, and he quite obviously had his most productive season to date. His junior career ran the gamut — from getting cut by the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s after his first junior season to being named an assistant captain and scoring 64 points in 42 games two seasons ago with the Gatineau Olympiques in the QMJHL.
After that wildly successful final season — one that saw McGinn finish second on his team in scoring despite missing considerable time with an injury — he signed an entry-level deal with the Flyers, making the jump to professional hockey and the Adirondack Phantoms a year ago.
He dipped his toe in the AHL pool like most rookies do at that point in their careers: In a bottom-six role, chipping in here and there on offense and, yes, because this is the Flyers’ organization, chipping in as part of a committee of fighters in Glens Falls.
Much like several of the other players we’ve profiled in our Top 25 Under 25 series to date, McGinn faces a big season this year with the Phantoms. He was called up as one of nine Black Aces in the postseason a year ago, so the organization clearly thinks he’s of some value, but it’ll be on him this coming year to prove his true potential and break out of the rookie shell.
If McGinn is ever going to be a contributor for the Philadelphia Flyers, we’ll likely have an idea of what he can provide before the AHL season wraps up next spring.
