Complete with real, live goals! Flyers surprise Devils, win 3-2

about 4 hours ago: Philadelphia Flyers Claude Giroux (28) skates past New Jersey Devils defenseman Colin White (5) in the second period of an NHL hockey game Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Michael Perez)

With the way the Flyers offense has played lately, a two goal, second period deficit against the defensive minded New Jersey Devils seemed like an insurmountable cliff to climb.

Not so fast. The Flyers took over the hockey game after Anssi Salmela scored early in the second and never looked back. James van Riemsdyk opened the scoring on a great individual play and shot that beat Martin Brodeur late in the period. With time continuing to run down, Jeff Carter actually somehow didn't miss a shot and beat Brodeur to tie the game with 24 ticks remaining.

Somehow, it was a hockey game, and the Flyers had all the momentum. In the third period, Philadelphia would add a tie breaking goal from Mike Richards to give the home team the lead for good. They won this game by doing all the things we talked about; they were opportunistic offensively and solid defensively and in goal.

One place where they could've used serious improvement, though? Specialty teams. Ilya Kovalchuk had an absurd 11:02 of power play time, and being a man down for six whole minutes of the first period didn't help the Flyers gain any edge off the bat. That's not an excuse, though, because a solid penalty kill can lead to momentum. The Flyers didn't do that, and when they finally got a power play of their own, Salmela scored his goal shorthanded.

Sticking with Salmela: he was seriously injured tonight when, just after his goal, he took a shot from Carter. Much more on that here. He's walking around and talking and didn't go to the hospital, but he has some teeth and a broken nose. He should be fine, though.

Salmela's fine, Flyers win. See you on Wednesday, Devils. After the jump, questions with answers and the comment of the night.

Jeff Carter Knocks Anssi Salmela Out Cold

In the midst of a gorgeous little goal to put the Devils up 2-0 on the Flyers in the second period on Monday night, Anssi Salmela was knocked out cold following a hit from Jeff Carter. He appeared to lose consciousness before hitting the ice, and the brunt of his visible injuries seemed to come from his impact with the ice. By all accounts, there was a lot of blood on the ice once Salmela was carted off.

My first reaction was that this was a dirty hit. The timing is extremely suspect, and in real time it looks absolutely terrible. When you slow it down and take a look at the replay, it's a little less incriminating. It looks like a shoulder to the head of Salmela instead of an elbow, and the Devil has his head down in a high traffic area.

It wasn't a terribly late hit regardless, but if the argument is that Carter caught Salmela late, the obvious rebuttal is that if Michael Leighton makes the initial save, Salmela is right in front of him to bang home a rebound. Carter took care of that. Otherwise, I would say that this is an unnecessary hit, but given that little nuance it's hard to make that judgment.

Either way, it's a blindside hit, and league officials have stated they're trying to get blindside hits out of the game.

Just as with the Mike Richards hit on David Booth earlier this season, the result is terrible but it's hard to argue that Carter intended to injure Salmela. It would've been a shoulder-on-shoulder check if Salmela didn't have his head down.

We're not going to try to figure out how the NHL levies suspension decisions, but there was no penalty on the play. It basically comes down to which camp you're in. Do you believe that discipline should be handed out based on intent or based on result?

Poll
Does Jeff Carter deserve to be suspended for his hit on Anssi Salmela?

Flyers lobby NHL to host Entry Draft, All-Star Game in 2012 or 2013

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have expressed interest in hosting the NHL Entry Draft and/or the NHL All-Star Game in 2012 or 2013. That is, of course, only if Darren Daulton is wrong.

The Flyers have never hosted the Draft in their 42 year existence, and they've only hosted the All-Star Game twice, in 1976 and 1992. Typically, the host city for the Draft is announced about a year in advance, but sometimes it's in even less time than that. The 2010 event will be held in Los Angeles and there's no word yet on 2011. That goes for the All-Star Game as well, which isn't being played this year because of the Olympic break.

We're not really sure why the Flyers didn't express interest in hosting the 2011 events, but presumably it's a logistical issue involving the planning. Also, and this is completely speculation on my part, but maybe Comcast-Spectacor is thinking that they'd like to have the 'Philly Live!' development around the Wachovia Center complete for such an event.

That construction is tied to the demolition of the Spectrum, which by last check is still slated for early this year. The Cordish Company, who is overseeing that project, hopes to start construction by this summer, meaning it's safe to assume that the project would be done in time for an All-Star Game or the Draft to come to Philadelphia in 2012 or 2013.

It's not often that both events are held in the same city in the same year, with a notable exception being made to Montreal in 2009 as part of their 100th year celebration that seemed to actually last for about 20 years.

Ilya Kovalchuk has been a member of the New Jersey Devils for two games now, but he's yet to give the team the offensive spark they hoped he would bring. Will he score his first goal as a member of the Devils this evening in Philadelphia? Let's hope not.

New Jersey is in a much better situation than the Flyers. That much is evident by looking at the standings, or by just knowing that the Devils are the Devils. But right now, Newark's finest aren't playing so well. In fact, they're playing a lot like the Flyers.

Here's In Lou We Trust's John Fischer describing the Devils last outing:

42 shots, 5 power plays, all kinds of shots, rebounds, looks, and pressure, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped all but one.  A second period surge got the Rangers 3 fairly quickly goals, but it was Lundqvist who bailed the Rangers out over and over and over before, during, and after that surge.

Juxtapose that with the Flyers game versus the Wild on Saturday and you have a nearly symmetrical situation: second period let down, a ton of shots, not so many goals. Should we expect the same thing again? Probably not.

The Devils will put Kovalchuk on a line with now-healthy Patrik Elias again and it's only a matter of time before they find chemistry. We can hope that it doesn't happen tonight, but more than likely we're going to need the Flyers offense to do some slump busting if they want points against the Devils over the next two games.

It's a matter of finishing. They're generating offense and spending time the opposing zone, but they just can't get the puck in the net. They need to take better shots, get more traffic in front of the goalie and most of all, be opportunistic in their chances. The Flyers can't afford to not score on three-on-one rushes tonight, for example.

On the flip side, the defense needs to hold up just like it has over the three-game road trip. As a whole they all played quite well and they'll need to keep it up again to keep Kovalchuk, Elias, and Zach Parise off the scoreboard.

Ville Leino won't make his Flyers debut tonight. Michael Leighton is in goal against Martin Brodeur, although he hasn't been confirmed. After the jump, full line combinations, stats on the starting goaltenders, questions to answer and our in-game discussion.

Calling Time Out.

Eds. Note:  This was bumped from the fanposts because, well, I greatly enjoyed it.  You don't have to agree, but it's worth reading.

Ladies and gents,

I'm as frustrated as the rest of you - if not more so - with the state of the Flyers nowadays.  There's a lot to dislike, and there's very little to inspire confidence (at least for this year).  Quite frankly, I felt flat-out furious with this team earlier on in the season, because I felt like I had been lied to.  The Flyers would be "relentless" every game; "next year" would surely be "now."

Not so fast.  Instead of a dynamic offense, smothering defense, and good-enough-to-win goaltending, we find ourselves with an offense prone to deep funks, an improving defense (with little depth in case of injuries), and... good-enough-to-win goaltending.  So we got roughly 40% of what we were promised, and we see where that's gotten us.  Yuck.  Oh well, there's always NEXT YEAR!  (Cue circus music.)

Today's open discussion thread, including your daily dose of Philadelphia Flyers news and notes...

  • Last night's NHL scores... WAS 5 - PIT 4 (OT); BOS 3 - MON 0
  • The Flyers are now in a three-way tie for the 8th and final playoff spot. [NHL]
  • The Capitals have now won 14 games in a row.  FOURTEEN.  But at least the folks over at Japers' know what matters: "That's why today's game meant more than most of the ones in the streak. It's only February, but a come from behind win against last year Cup champs at least means a little something." [Japers' Rink]
  • Jacob De Serres took the loss as Brandon's win streak came to an end, 4-3 (OT).  He made 36 saves. [Luber's Lounge]
  • Jakub Kovar made 40 saves, plus 5 of 10 in a 4-3 shootout loss. [euroflyers]
  • Jonathan Willis breaks down the Leino trade. [Hockey or Die]
  • The Flyers are looking for the Leino trade to... help each other out?  What?? [Inquirer]

  • What's the worst hockey trade ever?  Actually Lindros to Flyers isn't on the list. [Jewels From the Crown]
  • Lastly, a fantastic piece entitled "Coaches convenient cover for G.M.s"  No, it's not that subtle. [DelcoTimes]

As if losing a game and flying home at two in the morning wasn't bad enough, Oskars Bartulis needed help digging out once they got back to Philadelphia. According to the Flyers Twitter account, Danny Briere and Ian Laperriere stayed til the end to make sure everybody got their cars out safely. Photo via @NHLFlyers.

Offense invisible yet again as Flyers lose to Wild, 2-1

Khudobin wound up saving this puck. Story of the night.

Khudobin wound up saving this puck. Story of the night.

[Boxscore] - [Minnesota Reaction]

The story of the game? Anton Khudobin. He was fantastic as he stifled the Flyers for two and a half hours in his first NHL start to pick up a 2-1 victory on Saturday night. Man, those Wild certainly know how to stock the system with solid goaltenders. At least that's what everybody is going to be talking about tonight.

Sure, Khudobin was good. But the real story of the game? How the Flyers are completely, 100-percent inept when it comes to finishing and actually putting a puck across the goal line. They can generate all the chances in the world, and that shouldn't be a surprise with the talent on this team.

But they can't score a goal. There are no finishers on this hockey team, and if they want to accomplish anything in the realm of hockey success, they're going to have to acquire one. Quickly.

The problem isn't the defense. No, they were just fine tonight and they've been just fine on that end this entire road trip. The problem isn't the goaltending either. Was Michael Leighton fantastic tonight? No. Much like Khudobin, he was solid but not Brodeur-esque.

He let up a few soft goals, both of which were without a doubt his fault. That's not the difference in the game, however, as Leighton has received just two goals of support in his last four losses. The difference is the Flyers can't score a goal. It's not a difficult concept to understand, but it may be a difficult problem to overcome.

After the jump, questions with answers and the comment of the night.
