4 – The number of goals both Robert Hagg and Valtteri Filppula were on the ice for in all situations last night. On top of being on the ice for four goals against, the pair failed to be on the ice for any of the Flyers’ goals. According to Natural Stat Trick, Hagg and Filppula became the second and third Flyers to provide such a performance this season.
The only other time a member of the Orange and Black had been on the ice for four goals against and failed to be on the ice for a single goal in a game this season was when Ivan Provorov was on the ice for four goals against in a 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 2nd.
A few more Flyers have had nights where they have been on the ice for three goals against in all situations and failed to be on the ice for a single goal for. Jori Lehtera fell into this category in last night’s defeat, while Andrew MacDonald and Sean Couturier weren’t that far behind Provorov in the forgetful result that was the four-goal loss to the Pens earlier this month.
The 6-5 loss to the Predators in Nashville on October 10 saw Provorov and Couturier post this stat line, while Provorov repeated the act in a 3-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on November 1. Wayne Simmonds and Scott Laughton did this against the Vancouver Canucks on November 21. Laughton completed the feat a second time in a 6-4 win over the New York Islanders on January 4, and was joined by Taylor Leier. Radko Gudas somehow ended up on this list in Philadelphia’s 5-3 win against the Devils in New Jersey on January 13, while Provorov and Claude Giroux were the most recent Flyers to have this type of down night in the 5-1 loss to the New York Rangers on January 16.
5 – The number of goals the Capitals scored in a row to take control of the game last night. It was the third game this season where the Flyers allowed five unanswered goals.
The first time Philly allowed five straight goals came in their 6-2 defeat to the Anaheim Ducks back on October 24th. After Couturier opened the scoring, the Ducks rattled off five straight before Couturier and Ondrej Kase traded goals in the final ten minutes of the game. The second time was that 5-1 loss to the Rangers on January 16. After Jordan Weal redirected a Gudas’ shot, the Blueshirts produced the next five goals to hand the Flyers their only loss in a nine-game stretch.
The Flyers are one of seven teams who have allowed five unanswered goals in three games or more this season. Both the Edmonton Oilers and New York Islanders have allowed five unanswered goals in five different games this season, while the Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks both allowed this to happen in four different games. The Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins have each allowed five straight goals in three different games. The Pens are the only team to allow five straight goals twice in the same game, which happened in their 10-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on October 5.
