Amidst all of the draft news and welcoming the two newest Flyers, Joel Farabee and Jay O’Brien, to the team, Ron Hextall re-signed a familiar face. Samuel Morin, who will be out most likely until February 2019 with a torn ACL, received a three year extension from the club yesterday as reported by Stephen Whyno. The extension is worth $2.1 million over the three years.

In terms of cap hit alone, this is a great deal for the Flyers. If Morin turns out to be an instant contributor when he projects to join the team in February or March at the latest, and he continues to produce, it’s a steal of a contract. Morin will be under contract through the 2020-2021 season, which by that point he will be at the still young age of 25. Even if Morin is unable to become a contributor at the NHL level, this contract is dirt cheap and won’t hurt the team in the long run or short term. I think it’s safe to say we’re all hoping Morin puts it together and can stay healthy, that might be the case even more with the contract he’s on now.
Morin played just 17 games between the Philadelphia Flyers and Lehigh Valley Phantoms last season. He scored 7 points in 15 games with the Phantoms and no points in just two games with the Flyers.
So what does this say about the organization’s belief in Morin? A good bit. They want to see what they truly have in Morin at the NHL level, but they’re being smart and not overcommitting a ton of money to a guy who has only played a grand total of three NHL games so far.
