The Flyers have recalled 29-year-old goalie Cal Petersen from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the club announced Thursday evening.
Petersen, acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the three-way Ivan Provorov trade in June, is likely to serve primarily as Sam Ersson’s backup for the foreseeable future after franchise netminder Carter Hart suffered a mid-body injury against the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night.
At this time, it is unclear how long Hart is expected to be out of action.
Once considered a candidate to supersede Jonathan Quick as the Kings’ No. 1 goalie, Petersen has regressed considerably since signing a three-year, $15 million contract in September of 2021. He has largely disappointed in Lehigh Valley to start the season, posting a .884 save percentage and 3.76 goals against average along with a 1-3-0 record through four starts.
Petersen is likely to earn a start during the Flyers’ upcoming back-to-back set. The Flyers wrap up a home-and-home against the Sabres Friday night before facing off against the Kings — his former team — Saturday on Broad Street.
