Although he had a busy Wednesday afternoon with the Sean Walker trade and signing Nick Seeler, Flyers general manager Danny Briere had one little surprise as the clock was nearing midnight Eastern.
As part of the trade between the Calgary Flames and the Vegas Golden Knights announced late Wednesday evening involving Noah Hanifin heading to Vegas, the Flyers acted as a broker between the two sides in order to make the numbers work under the salary cap. Elliotte Friedman reported the Flyers received a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft from Vegas in exchange for retaining 25 per cent of Hanifin’s contract ($1,237,500 retained according to capfriendly). The retention is only until the end of this season as Hanifin then becomes an unrestricted free agent.
The fifth-round pick acquired in the Hanifin trade essentially replaces the pick the Flyers lost earlier in the day as part of the Sean Walker trade. As reported Wednesday afternoon the package to ship out Walker also included a fifth-round pick in 2026 heading to Colorado.
The Flames received two conditional draft picks and defenceman Daniil Miromanov as part of the Hanifin trade.
