The Philadelphia Flyers made their final moves and announced their opening roster for the 2021-22 season on Monday. There were only a few question marks left –– maybe only one, actually –– and we got our answers.
It was originally thought that the Flyers would go with a 20-man roster to begin the season, but they have one more: Kevin Hayes will start on the active roster rather than injured reserve after surgery last month.
The Flyers’ final cuts are Jackson Cates, Nick Seeler, Cam York, and Garrett Wilson. All four of those players will start the season in the AHL with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
The only “disappointing” cut, after Morgan Frost was demoted last week, is York, but there really isn’t a spot for him on the Flyers’ blue line yet. Seeler is likely the Flyers’ seventh defenseman and he’ll be a short car ride away if needed for the first four games at home.
Cates and Wilson both had a chance to secure a roster spot as the Flyers’ 12th forward, but the Orange and Black elected to go a different route.
The Flyers claimed forward Patrick Brown off of waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights earlier on Monday. The 29-year-old forward is projected to be on the Flyers’ fourth line with Nate Thompson and Nicolas Aube-Kubel to start the season.
