Claude Giroux, Shayne Gostisbehere to have surgery on their hips, abdominals on Tuesday

On Saturday afternoon the Flyers confirmed reports from earlier this week that Claude Giroux will have surgery this upcoming week on his injured right hip, but the team — which has not fully revealed its post-season surgery list yet — had some other news on Giroux as well as rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.

From that posting, via the Flyers:

Flyers General Manager Ron Hextall gave the following injury update on center Claude Giroux and defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere on Saturday afternoon:

“Claude Giroux and Shayne Gostisbehere are both scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday, May 17th to have their right hips repaired as well as bilateral lower abdominal tears repaired.

Their hip surgery will be performed by Dr. Eric Kropf and their abdominal surgery will be performed by Dr. William Meyers.

We expect both players to be able to return to full activity in 10-12 weeks.”

The release announces that in addition to hip issues Giroux was dealing with abdominal tears, while it also appears to state that Gostisbehere is, oddly enough, dealing with the exact same injuries and will have the exact same surgeries as Giroux. (Really, what are the odds?)

Giroux appeared to be playing hurt for much of the later part of the season and the playoffs, while Gostisbehere just completed the longest season of his hockey career. That they both are dealing with fairly significant injuries is not a surprise.

The 10-12 week timetable given for both would make them both fully healed by early to mid-August, giving them plenty of time before camp in September. It would also give them both time to be healthy for the World Cup of Hockey in September, would either or both of them be named to their respective rosters. In any case, here’s to both of them being ready to go at full health come training camp.
