Goaltending is always a big topic of discussion in Philadelphia and this season has been no different for the Flyers. Carter Hart and Samuel Ersson have put up very similar numbers with the assigned backup outplaying the starter during certain parts of the year.
All talks of that potential goalie controversy came to a halt on Tuesday afternoon with the news that Hart was granted an indefinite leave of absence from the team for personal reasons. Ersson got the start in net that night with the Flyers recalling veteran backup Cal Petersen from the AHL.
Philadelphia took a flier on Ersson in the fifth round (143rd overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft. The Swedish netminder remained in his home country as he worked his way up to the SHL — Sweden’s top league — eventually earning starting spots for two consecutive seasons. He then came overseas to develop in the AHL.
